Research Scientist

- (3224827)

We are seeking a full-time analytical biochemist with expertise in mass spectrometry to join the Mootha lab at Massachusetts General Hospital and Howard Hughes Medical Institute. We combine genomics, systems biology, and human investigations to study metabolism utilizing a holistic approach. Our team is a mix of highly enthusiastic biochemists, physicians and bioinformaticians.

The Research Scientist will work independently under direction of PI. The applicant will collaborate closely with group members to develop methods, run samples, and analyze data. The ideal candidate should have ample hands-on experience independently operating and maintaining LC-MS and GC-MS instrumentation with a proven track record of full scan analysis, targeted measurements, and quantitation in complex biological samples. The primary instruments in our lab are a Thermo Q-Exactive+ LC-MS and a Thermo Exactive GC-MS.

This is a rare opportunity to be a part of a dynamic and highly collaborative research team. The compensation will be very competitive while also affording opportunities to be co-author on many exciting basic and translational papers. To learn more about the lab please visit: http://mootha.med.harvard.edu/

The position will involve a combination of independent work as well as close collaboration with students, fellows, clinicians and bioinformaticians. The candidate should be able to train the staff in the basic theory and practical implementation of the instrumentation. Because of the interactive nature of our lab, excellent oral and written communication skills are also critical.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Independently provide regular maintenance for our LC-MS and GC-MS
  • Interact with technical support to perform preventative maintenance and address any technical issues that arise.
  • Develop LC-MS and GC-MS methods to detect and quantify metabolites, drugs, and related compounds
  • Interact closely with lab members to plan and perform experiments at every stage from sample collection and preparation to data collection and analysis
  • Efficiently organize lab use of LC-MS and GC-MS to optimize throughput of samples
  • Contribute to preparation of manuscripts, grants and scientific presentations
  • Train investigators in techniques relating to artificial stimulation, and data processing.
  • Assemble data into figures and text for publication
  • Interface with laboratory personnel as needed to help train/mentor new lab members

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

  • Graduate or industry training in analytical chemistry with strong practical and theoretical expertise in LC-MS and GC-MS including separations techniques
  • Proven track record of LC-MS and GC-MS application to metabolomics and stable isotope tracer experiments
  • Proficiency with data acquisition and analysis software (such as TraceFinder, Compound Discoverer, XCalibur, Progenesis)
  • Strong computational skills to independently analyze data with standard statistical tools and methods
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to interact with colleagues and technical support
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and productively.
  • Strong research design and analytical skills
  • Demonstrated ability to problem solve
  • Strong teaching skills and ability to supervise trainees and students

Education/Experience Required:

  • PhD required in biology or in biomedical field
  • 5 years of postdoctoral research experience required
