Job description
Overview:
This entry level research technician position provides a unique opportunity to learn new concepts and techniques while working with PhD level scientists to determine the potentially protective role of exhausted CD8 T cells in type 1 diabetes (T1D), building from past publications (Long, et.al., Sci Imm, Wiedeman, et.al., JCI).

The Long Lab is a translational immunology lab focused on better understanding underlying mechanisms of autoimmune disease, patient variability, and response to therapy. Currently, we are primarily focused on three, inter-related projects in the setting of T1D: 1) Causes and consequences of reduced response to IL-2, 2) Differentiation and stability of CD8 T cell exhaustion associated with better outcome, and 3) identification of biomarkers of T1D severity. Each of these projects use human samples, are collaborative in context working with the diabetes team and systems immunology, and use the resources of the BRI Human Immunophenotyping (HIP) Core. By providing these opportunities, I hope to foster creative thinking and collaboration in my lab that will move the field closer to treatments of autoimmunity. This learning environment has enabled multiple technicians from my lab to successfully move to higher education (graduate school, medical school) and more advanced positions in industry.

Responsibilities:
The Research Technician I will be responsible for performing cellular and molecular experiments, recording and analyzing data, communicating results with lab members and the BRI scientific community, and maintaining equipment.

The applicant will:
  • Work with PhD level scientist to design, perform and analyze experiments relevant to CD8 ‘exhausted’ cells found in T1D to determine molecular mechanisms that underlie differentiation, stability and function of these cells at different stages of disease
  • Learn best practices in design, performance and analysis of high dimensional flow and mass cytometry
  • Present findings at lab meetings and to broader scientific communities as opportunities arise
  • Foster a friendly, collaborative learning environment that prioritizes integrity and respect, innovation and agility, and constant inquiry
Qualifications:
  • Requires a BA/BS in a scientific field
  • Demonstrated track record of scientific curiosity, collaboration with others, and independent thought
  • Must be detail oriented, having strong mathematical skills
  • Need to be able to quickly learn proper operation of complex laboratory instruments and equipment
  • Must have good verbal and writing skills
  • Preferred: experience with tissue culture and flow cytometry
Compensation:
$21.29 to $30.22 per hour
Benefits:
  • Medical, dental, vision hardware insurance
  • Flexible spending accounts: health care, dependent care, commuter
  • Short and long-term disability and life and AD&D insurance
  • 403(b) retirement plan with matching funds after one year of employment
  • PTO: 13 holidays, three weeks of vacation and two weeks of sick leave per year
  • Employee assistance program
  • Tuition reimbursement program
  • Subsidized bus pass
  • Subsidized YMCA membership
  • Voluntary benefits, e.g., pet insurance, accident, critical illness, identify theft
  • See benaroyaresearch.org for benefit details
