Job description
Program Description: RISE-uP is designed as a social-justice oriented, culturally responsive and anti-racist space to engage students who need support re-entering the RHS community. The program will serve a wide range of students from those returning to school from hospitalization, those struggling to engage with peers/teachers and those requiring more intensive interdisciplinary work to engage in grade-level curriculum. A Complete Program and Job Description can be found here. RHS Restorative Practices Interventionist: The RHS Restorative Practices Interventionist will be responsible for leading RISE-uP. This educator will teach RISE-uP Seminar to a group of RISE-uP Fellows (see below). They will also collaborate with RHS Administration to develop RISE-uP into an effective student support program. Therefore, they should be comfortable with the uncertainty associated with program development and have the leadership skills necessary to build towards a vision. They must be comfortable with the reality that their goals in September will be different than their goals in June because of their ability to be responsive to their experience and the evolving need of the program they build. Candidate selection will consider a number of factors including, prior formal experience with Restorative Practices, experience bringin anti-racism and culturally responsive practices to life in the classroom, their experience with MTSS and their ability to develop a programmatic vision. The interventionist will collaborate with and report to the Assistant Principal for Student Success. The RHS Restorative Interventionist will:
  • Recruit, train and mentor Rise-Up Fellows
  • Engage in Suffolk University Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 Restorative Practices Training
  • Collaborate with administrators, counselors and teachers to plan Restorative Circles and Conferences
  • Engage with Students and Teacher to understand the root cause of conflict and work to repair harm
  • Facilitate Peer Mediation and Peer Mentoring
  • Coach Colleagues who want to grow their Restorative Practices
  • Tutor RISE-uP Students by Coordinating with their Classroom Teachers
  • Collaborate with School Social Workers, Counselors, Outside Clinicians and Administrators to contribute to the development of a re-engagement plan for RISE-uP Students
  • Use RHS data and research on restorative practices to inform strategic planning
RISE-uP Fellows: The Restorative Practices Interventionist will work with RHS Administration to identify 3-4 rising seniors and juniors each semester to enroll in the RISE-uP Seminar. The RISE-uP Fellows will be racially, culturally, linguistically and academically diverse so that their mentees can see themselves in the fellows. The cohort of RISE-uP Fellows should represent the beautiful diversity of the RHS student body and should showcase for mentees the resiliency of our youth. Ideal candidates would be students who struggled freshman year but have demonstrated significant personal, academic and social-emotional growth over their time at RHS. They will engage in the following activities on a regular basis for academic credit:
  • Restorative Practices Training
  • Campus of Difference Curriculum
  • Explore Topics in the Quest for Social Justice
  • Peer Mediation, Tutoring and Mentoring Training
RISE-uP Seminar: The Restorative Practices Interventionist will build a curriculum that is academically rigorous. Supported by training from the Suffolk University Institute for Restorative Justice, faculty and students study Restorative Practices as both an academic discipline and as a tool for building school culture. This curriculum should be responsive to the current moment and provide both RISE-uP Fellows and Students the opportunity to engage in stimulating discourse about the world around them. With support, the Restorative Interventionist will design a curriculum that engages their fellows in the following four areas:
  • Restorative Practices Training
  • Peer Tutoring and Mentoring
  • Cultural Diversity and Anti-Bias Training (ADL Campus of Difference Curriculum)
  • Topics in the Quest for Social Justice
Programmatic Services to RHS Community: RISE-uP is designed to create a space at RHS that invites belonging, celebrates cultural diversity and helps reintegrate students into the RHS community. Because the program provides the opportunity to re-engage students throughout the day, every day, it is a step in the direction of building Tiered Supports at RHS. The following are examples of the work RISE-uP Fellows and Faculty may do to engage their students:
  • Structured Peer Mediation and Restorative Circles
  • Planned Harm Circles
  • Social-Emotional Re-Entry Planning from Extended Absences
  • Academic Tutoring to Support Re-Entry from Extended Absences
  • Coordination with STEM Center and Writing Center Fellows and Interventionists to provide targeted support
  • Designated Re-Engagement Zone for students who need a structured and supportive break from their day before returning to class.
Program Structure: The Interventionist will teach RISE-uP Seminar and collaborate with administrators to implement restorative practices. The program will be available to students, based on referral from their Assistant Principal, for either period-specific, whole-day or extended service. The Assistant Principal for Student Success will coordinate with Social Workers, Counselors and the Interventionist to ensure appropriate placement. Students who engage with the program for the entire day will begin their experience in partnership with the School Counselor, Social Worker and/or Administrator during Period 1.
