Overview:

JHNA is seeking a Safety Engineer/Analyst to support the Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Product Office (PO). The chosen candidate will support the UAS PO product directors by planning, coordinating, and executing a comprehensive system safety program for the product area required. This position is in Huntsville, AL.

Roles/Responsibilities:

  • Perform risk management task, risk analyses, hazard identification and classification, hazard tracking as part of the overall engineering effort.
  • Evaluate risk related mitigation corrective actions to determine their effectiveness in maintaining a safe system/platform.
  • Demonstrated understanding of software testing techniques and the ability to evaluate various models used for software testing.
  • Serve as the principal consultant, advisor, and top technical authority on safety related matters.
  • Ensure system safety in considered during all phases of the acquisition life cycle to include development, testing, qualification, acquisition, fielding, product improvement, and sustainment of the system and for the support of system configuration in development production, modification, and fielding programs.
  • Ensure compliance with the requirements of applicable safety regulations such as MIL-STD-882 (System Safety Program Requirements), AR 385-10 (System Safety Engineering and Management), AMCOM 385-17 (Software System Safety) and appropriate industry standards such as SAE APR 4754/4761, RTCA DO-178, DO-278, DO-254 and DO-330. Examples would include Safety Program Plans (SSP), Safety Assessment Reports (SAR), Hazard Analyses (HA) and Safety Verifications.
  • Provide the required government interface between industry and defense agencies to gather the support required to meet system safety requirements, goals, and objectives.
  • Meet with internal Project Management Office (PMO) Staff, matrix support personnel, and contractor personnel to determine status of safety programs, budgets, costs, schedules, and accomplishments and takes appropriate actions to correct deficiencies and/or improve status of the above.
  • Evaluate contractor system safety products, plans and processes for technical competence, completeness, and accuracy; then provide the Government with recommended changes to contractor's documentation based on these evaluations.
  • Perform research, analyses, and other related staff coordination for the preparation of risk documentation such System Safety Risk Assessments (SSRAs) and Risk Determination (RDs), then prepare risk documentation as required in accordance with AR 385-10, for the appropriate risk acceptance authority.
  • Prepare, update, review, or assist in development of system safety analysis to include both hardware and software safety analysis, Functional Hazard Analysis (FHA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), System Safety Program Plans (SSPP), System Safety Management Plans (SSMP), and System Safety Assessment Reports (SSAR).
  • Ensure system safety principles, criteria and techniques are implemented throughout software development lifecycle and safety critical software is defined in Software Development Plans (SDP).
  • Prepare, review, or provide input to software safety related technical data packages in support of Army Material Release efforts.
  • Perform, develop, or review safety requirements for incorporation into new and existing system development or improvement efforts.
  • Lead and represent the PMO in System Safety Working Groups (SSWG), Safety Integrated Product Teams (IPT), and Technical Reviews.



Qualifications:


Required

  • Bachelor of Science (or higher) in an engineering discipline from an accredited college or university
  • Must currently hold or be able to obtain a DoD security clearance at the secret level
  • Ability to travel 20% of the time
  • Five (5) years of U.S. Army aviation-related technical experience is required
  • Knowledge of relevant local regulations and industry standards
  • Strong analytical skills, systematic and structured way of working
  • Professional experience using Microsoft Office applications to include Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Project, and Word is required
  • Candidate must possess strong oral and written communication skills
  • Must be a self-starter that thrives in a dynamic team environment
  • Candidate must possess a proven ability to develop and provide reports to management
  • Manage and prioritize tasks while supporting multiple products at varying life cycle phases
  • US Citizenship is required
  • Active DoD Secret security clearance and the ability to maintain such is required
