High school Counselors advise students in making academic and career plans. Many help students with personal problems that interfere with their education. They help students choose classes and plan for their lives after graduation. Counselors provide information about choosing and applying for colleges, training programs, financial aid, and apprenticeships. They may present career workshops to help students search and apply for jobs, write résumés, and improve interviewing skills.
ASPIRA School Counselor Essential Functions:
- Help students understand and overcome social or behavioral problems through individual and group counseling
- Provide individual and small group counseling based on student needs
- Work with students to develop skills, such as organization, time management, and effective study habits
- Help students set realistic academic and career goals and develop a plan to achieve them
- Evaluate students’ abilities and interests through assessments, interviews, and individual planning
- Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and parents to help students succeed
- Analyze academic data and create plans to keep students on track to graduate
- Deliver classroom guidance lessons on topics, such as bullying, drug abuse, and planning for college or careers after graduation, etc.
- Develop and implement prevention, intervention and support services using the ASCA Code of Ethics
- Ensure the confidentiality of protected information
- Take appropriate and timely measures to keep students safe
- Report any suspicion of abuse and/or neglect as required by law. CPS – See Something/Say Something
- Provide prevention and crisis management services and serve on the crisis management team
- Create, implement and maintain career education plans for all students
- Consult and collaborate with teachers, staff and parents to support student achievement and wellness
- Plan and implement a college student monitoring system and conduct college visits to support Naviance
- Assist in the development of programs and services with external partners
- Assist teachers with recommendations for effective classroom management
- Maintain PowerSchool records on student referrals by log entries
- Develop and maintain family outreach programs and community partnerships
- Conduct home visits as needed to ensure student engagement
- Make sure students with special abilities and needs are supported and integrated
- Assist with registration of students, planning class schedules and graduation activities
- Support ASPIRA mission and school operations through active participation and involvement in ASPIRA and community events
- Complete documentation and reports as required by Federal, State and local agencies and requested by Principal or designee
- Maintain positive, cooperative, and mutually supportive relationships with the central administration, parents, and representatives of resource agencies
- Display the highest ethical and professional behavior and standards when working with students, parents, school personnel, and agencies associated with the school
- Perform other duties as assigned
Other duties include the following:
- Use aptitude and achievement assessments to help clients evaluate their interests, skills, and abilities
- Evaluate student’s background, education, and training to help them develop realistic goals
- Guide students through making decisions about their careers such as choosing a new profession and the type of degree to pursue
- Advise students on how to resolve problems in the workplace such as conflicts with bosses or coworkers
- Help students select and apply for educational programs to obtain the necessary degrees, credentials, and skills
Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree in Counseling, Social Work or Psychology from an accredited university
- Professional Educator License in Counseling
- Clinical experience working in school or community-based organizations preferred
- Experience working with minority students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds and in the target community to be served
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English and Spanish preferred
- Ability to use technology effectively and efficiently
- Current valid driver’s license and appropriate insurance level
- Willingness to travel with advance notice
- Willingness to work flexible hours and weekends according to program needs
