Position Summary

Scribe/Readers may work with students in classes and/or during tests. Scribe/Readers are not responsible to know course material but an understanding is required for certain level classes (e.g. math, science, foreign language, etc.). Position hours are flexible, determined by which class(es) or test(s) they sign up for with a maximum of combined 16 hours per week. Most work will be on-ground; there will be minimal remote opportunities.

In Classes

Primary responsibilities are to write general notes and notes as directed by the student, potentially read or share student responses. Scribe/Readers typically assist the course for the entire quarter and assignments are determined based on student needs and Scribe/Reader availability around the start of each quarter. Each class can range from 1 to 3 hours and multiple classes are allowed.

During Tests

Primary responsibilities during tests are to read test content'and/or to write student responses exactly as dictated. Scribe/Readers typically assist for an entire test and are determined based on student needs and Scribe/Reader availability. Because tests are set up throughout the quarter, requests for work happen continuously and sometimes with only 1 day's notice. Shifts range from 1 to 6 hours and multiple tests are allowed.

Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule

Pay rate: $15.74/hr.

This position is typically assigned as needed on a quarterly basis, with no expectation of continued employment beyond the current appointment.

The temporary hourly employment is limited to the earlier of 1,050 hours or 12 consecutive months beginning from the original date of hire. Per WAC 357-04-045 , following 1,050 hours or 12 consecutive months, an individual is not eligible for re-employment at Bellevue College in another temporary part-time hourly position. Temporary hourly employees who work more than three hundred fifty (350) hours in a twelve consecutive month period may be subject to provisions of one the collective bargaining agreements covering Classified employees at Bellevue College.

This position is expected to NOT be eligible for benefits because eligibility is limited only to employees working at least an average of 80 hours in eligible employment for more than 6 consecutive months and at least 8 hours a month. Eligible positions are eligible for certain benefits .

About the Department

The Disability Resource Center (DRC) is dedicated to service excellence in the provision of comprehensive and flexible accommodation plans which contribute to the successful academic endeavors of qualified students who have disabilities. The DRC works in innovative ways to provide teaching and learning opportunities to college employees and community partners which further the understanding and success of the students we serve. The DRC nurtures and coaches its students in skills necessary to achieve success academically and in promoting essential life skills which will integrate students who have disabilities into the overall pluralistic fabric of the community.

Essential Functions

Write general notes on course lectures and notes as directed by student.
Read or share student responses to classroom.
Read test content and/or write student responses exactly as dictated.
Support other DRC team members.
Maintain confidentiality of all student information in accordance with FERPA laws.
Other duties and projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Effective communication, including reading and writing skills and being able to modify voice for in-class 'whispering'
Demonstrated note-taking ability and attention to detail
Ability to work with diverse student populations
Ability to attend all course meetings and proactive notice if unable to attend
Demonstrated ability to problem solve

Preferred Qualifications

Proficient in Math and Science terminology
