MANDATORY HOURS: 3PM – 7PM, Monday thru Friday

Under the supervision of the Neighborhood House (NH) Director of Finance, the NH Security Guard is responsible for the operation of the reception desk area, monitoring bus arrivals, children departures, securing the facility, handling a limited number of rental events at NH, and other security duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Report for duty and relieve the morning receptionist.
  • Provide phone courtesy, customer service and information to our guests regarding programs, appointments and visits.
  • Introduce yourself and become acquainted with parents and children names.
  • Make sure that all visitors and staff are signing in on the sign-in sheets, temperatures are read and Covid-19 questions are answered. All staff should have visible employee ID badges.
  • Become familiar with the evening programs between 4:30pm and 6:00pm in order to direct parents that are picking up their children to the correct location.
  • Monitor the parking in the loop drive. Cars should not block the loop drive and should park as close to the curb as to allow other cars to leave. Inform parents/drivers if they are not in compliance
  • Be present during bus arrivals, pick-ups, and departure times. During this time, rounds should not be made.
  • Be aware of groups gathering together. If groups gather, politely ask them to disperse.
  • Monitor the coat room to ensure the youths are storing their coats, hats, and backpacks properly, and that the door is closed and not left open for extended periods of time.
  • Periodic rounds of the main hallways, parking lots, courtyard and garage should be done regularly throughout the shift. Doors and windows should be closed at all times. Middle hallway doors should be locked at 5:00pm and all external doors should be locked at 7:00 pm. Any suspicious activities or vandalism should be noted on patrol reports.
  • As agreed to, in advance with the Director of Finance, staff the facility during NH rental events, enforcing all the normal rules with rental clientele and following the usual monitoring and closing procedures during NH program hours.
  • You must remain in the building until all NH program staff have left the building. (NH facility staff may sometimes be here late). On your last round, remind remote staff that the building will be closing at the appropriate time. Make sure to document your exact time of departure.
  • No cellphones are allowed at the desk during your shift.

  • Good communication skills, pleasant demeanor and professional phone etiquette.
  • Strong background in security guard roles and functions.

  • Ability to work well with diverse staff, clientele, volunteers and the general public.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative team environment.
  • Have interpersonal skills to assist with youths/teens as needed.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Requires education equivalent to a high school diploma. A prior background in security and public facility monitoring is required.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Strong communications skills are required. Must be able to communicate effectively and professionally with NH parents and family members as well as staff and visitors to the center.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to maintain public and facility carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Have interpersonal skills to assist with youths/teens as needed.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Use basic office equipment such as calculator, computer, telephone, paper cutter, copier, fax machine, printer, postage machine, and pencil sharpener.

The physical demands of this job include seeing, hearing, speaking and walking. While performing the duties of this job, the employee often climbs stairs, stoops or bends, and lifts and carries 15 to 50 pounds. Must be willing to stand/walk for a lengthy amount of time.
