Summary

This position has the responsibility of maintaining a safe and secure campus environment by providing the highest quality of protective services in order to maintain and improve our unique educational environment and quality of life.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide security and protective services on all properties owned and operated by Saint Xavier University by patrolling assigned areas and enforcing policies and procedures. This includes the security of buildings and access control, vigilant monitoring of parking areas, and providing general and emergency assistance to students, staff, faculty, and visitors.
  • Department members will appear at designated start time and location in prescribed uniform of the day and ready for duty. Responds to emergencies, conducts the preliminary assessment of the situation, and employs tact, diplomacy, and individual judgment to remedy and/or maintain control. Many situations will require the incumbent to provide on-site lead supervision over students and employees. Will also maintain proper chain of custody regarding evidence, and assist with ensuring preservation of crime scene/evidence.
  • Deter, restrain, and/or detain individuals attempting to commit criminal acts in their presence, or inflicting physical harm to themselves or others.
  • Complete necessary administrative forms/reports related to incidents and/or arrests, including gathering pertinent information from participants and/or witnesses. Provide supervisors with daily activity reports/summaries.
  • Maintain the strictest departmental confidentiality of any information or situations that you gather or are made aware of during the course of your duties.
  • Provide security during transportation of large sums of cash and/or valuables, including proper logging of lost and found items.
  • Maintain regular communication with dispatch and supervisory personnel to advise of unusual situations and to request backup when necessary.
  • Crosstrain to work in the Dispatch Center. Assigned to Dispatch Center when needed.
  • Appear in court regarding incidents that occur when necessary.
  • Enforce parking rules and regulations, assist with traffic crashes and investigations. Adhere to university fleet safety policy including pre-trip inspections, reporting equipment, and vehicle malfunctions. Wash security vehicles including cleaning interior of assigned vehicle.
  • After obtaining certification, provide emergency first aid and/or CPR/AED to injured persons, and coordinate with local EMS for the transportation of ill or injured persons when necessary.
  • Provide basic information and directions to students, faculty, administration, staff and/or the general public.
  • Maintain key control and/or access to secured and restricted locations.
  • Maintain positive relations with the local police department to obtain or exchange relevant public safety information.
  • Provide protective escort service to students, faculty, staff, and guests of the University.
  • Provide programs and presentations, which promote safety and security to students, faculty, administration and staff
  • Operate and monitor burglar alarm, access control, and video camera systems.
  • Assist supervisory staff in investigations or special projects as requested.
  • Attend internal and/or external training courses, classes, and seminars to further develop public safety skills and knowledge.
  • When assigned to residence hall, maintain a constant presence at the front desk of the residence hall.
  • Operate department radios, access control, and video camera systems, and monitor students as they enter the residence halls both visually and by using the access control system.
  • Verify the identity of each resident and guest entering the private residence area, and maintain a guest log and overnight log that documents the presence of such guests.
  • Maintain written logs of resident hall visitors and actions taken, and assists residential life staff with all incidents including written report documentation, requests for assistance, and ensuring that all visitors have vacated the residence hall at the designated time.
  • Responsible for contacting, central dispatch, the watch commander or OIC, on-duty resident assistants (RA) and the on-call resident director in case of emergency.
  • Have a duty to call local emergency response services at the request of an on-duty supervisor and facilitate their assistance on campus if necessary.
  • Maintain a written log of any residential community equipment, or computers checked out to a resident by obtaining an approved photo ID upon use of equipment, as well as a maintenance log for each specific hall.
  • Become knowledgeable of all department and residence hall policies and procedures.
  • Maintain a courteous and pleasant environment and a well-groomed appearance
  • Be prepared to function accordingly based upon the needs of the department.
  • Report any criminal activity or violation of University policy, or incidents that occur on campus in your presence, whether or not you are on duty, to a supervisor or officer in charge in a timely manner.
  • Conduct regular safety and security premise checks of residence halls. Report all hazards on activity log and notify supervisor in a timely manner. May be required to submit online work order.
  • Perform other work-related duties as requested.

Qualifications

Education: High school graduation or GED. Associates Degree Preferred.

Experience: Prior law enforcement, emergency medical services (EMS), private security, military, or extensive public contact experience preferred. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license. Must have the ability to complete a 20-hour Basic Security Training Program, 4-hour handcuffing certification course, CPR/AED and Emergency First Aid Certificate. Must pass a background check that includes submitting fingerprints to the Illinois State Police and FBI. Cannot have any felony convictions, or have been convicted of domestic violence or related crimes. Must maintain a valid driver’s license with a record acceptable to our insurance carrier. Must be 21 years of age or older.
