General Purpose:

The SEMP Employment Specialist is a blended position consisting of Job Development & Placement for persons with disabilities (PWD) providing one to one job coaching. The SEMP Employment Specialist will be responsible for placing between 10-12 individuals per year through a process known as Customized Employment. Prior to placement, individuals are assessed through a “Discovery” process by interning at several work sites and interviewing significant people within their circle of support in order to arrive at a holistic picture about a person’s interest, aptitudes and vocational direction that will lead to a good job match. The Job Coaching aspect of the position consists of providing individual assistance and guidance to help individuals obtain training and maintaining employment. The most prevalent disability group is Intellectual/Developmental Disability; others may include secondary disabilities i.e. mental illness, visual impairment, or other conditions and impairments. The responsibilities are roughly split 50/50.


Essential Functions:

Employer Development & Placement

  • Responsible for overseeing Discovery process and final Discovery Report within an average of 90 days.
  • Develop a variety of community based sites for limited time internships that cover different types of career explorations, e.g., Pharmacy, clothing and big box settings such as Target, TJMaxx, food establishments, etc.
  • Maintain relationships with existing employers and develop new employer accounts quarterly.
  • Responsible for placing 10-12 individuals into gainful employment yearly.
  • Provide participants with job search services, including resume writing, interview preparation and when necessary, fill out paper and/or online applications with individual, and accompany them to Career Fairs and Hiring Events.
  • Responsible for “job matching” a participant’s experience, temperament and stated work settings and goals in order to place in appropriate job.
  • When applicable, market and be able to set up on-site job coaching for consumers.
  • Knowledgeable of Social Security work incentives and how employment affects an individual’s disability benefits.
  • Ability to educate employers on relevant program and placement issues: disability issues as they relate to employment, ADA issues, tax credits, job modifications, etc.


Coaching

  • Maintain departmental billing efficiency standards
  • Maintain accurate daily case-notes, monthly summaries, SAP’s and other necessary documentation in a timely manner, on agencies Electronic Health Record Platform (EHR)
  • Site visits with participants and employers throughout NYC Region in order to provide support services
  • Format clear and concise case notes and service plans in a timely manner.
  • Work in a cooperative manner with other Goodwill and non-GW programs and staff.
  • Work effectively with employers and management in order to facilitate accommodations and address workplace problems/issues to result in greater job retention.
  • Flexible Schedule and Travel throughout 5 boroughs, most time is spent out in the field at multiple sites and multiple boroughs daily
  • Additional duties as requested by Manager


Qualifications/Basic Job Requirements:

  • High school or GED required at minimum; Bachelor’s Degree preferred
  • 2 years’ experience working with persons with disabilities
  • Experience as a Job Developer and/or Sales Marketing or related field a plus
  • Proven ability to cultivate and maintain employer relationships with business and industry with a particular focus on employers providing employment opportunity in various fields
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Strong presentation and networking skills
  • Must be a team player and have strong work ethic
  • Must be flexible, open to new ideas, creative, and energetic
  • Must be able to manage multiple tasks and prioritize competing demands
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PPT)

Special Working Conditions:

  • Field based position, must be able to travel to multiple sites daily
  • Job primarily consists of field on-site and off site face to face visits with consumers.
  • Travel throughout the NYC mostly on public transportation


  • Salary Range:
    $41,000 - 48,000
