The Role

Reporting to the Environmental Manager you will join a team that also includes two full time and one part-time environmental engineers and a contractor. You will assist the Environmental Department in meeting a myriad of environmental regulatory obligations. Your primary responsibility will be implementing and managing the site’s environmental compliance activities, with a focus on clean air compliance program requirements. This includes evaluating compliance issues and developing compliance plans and permitting strategies necessary to remain compliant and resolve any issues.


Other key responsibilities will include:

  • Communicating any compliance issues to management and serving as a technical liaison between Environmental, other refinery departments and environmental government agencies.
  • Training refinery personnel on permitting requirements and participating in regulatory agency refinery inspections.
  • Functioning effectively in a team setting necessary to promote unity and develop workable solutions.
  • Build and maintain internal partnering relationships with other refinery departments such as Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, Safety and the Laboratory.
  • Establish and maintain external working relationships with regulatory agencies, trade associations, consultants and contractors.
  • Monitor environmental policies/regulations and establish compliance programs for the refinery.
  • Ensure environmental compliance manuals and procedures are periodically reviewed and kept current.
  • Complete accurate/timely compliance reports to applicable federal, state and local agencies.
  • Provide environmental permitting support.
  • Provide guidance and interpretation of environmental regulations to refining personnel.
  • Assist in the development of environmental procedures/guidelines.
  • Conduct refinery inspections.
  • Function effectively in a team setting necessary to promote unity and develop workable solutions.
  • Key environmental program areas regarding clean air compliance include Title V AOP, NSPS, MACT, NSR, NAAQS, Risk Management Program, Consent Decree Administration, Greenhouse Gas Reporting, Emission Inventory Reporting, assisting with EPA Fuels Compliance Reporting, Facilitate Source Testing, WA Cap and Invest Regulation Compliance Support.

The Requirements

To meet the basic qualification for this role, you will have legal authorization to work permanently in the United States for any employer without requiring a visa transfer or visa sponsorship. To be a good fit for the Senior Environmental Engineer role, you will have:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Chemical or Environmental Engineering (preferred) or another relevant scientific/technical field.
  • 5+ years of experience in environmental compliance, preferably in refining, petrochemical or manufacturing.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of federal, state and local environmental regulatory requirements.
  • A demonstrated ability to develop processes and programs specific to the refinery business and culture.
  • Solid experience with clean air compliance programs is strongly preferred.
  • Strong verbal and technical writing skills.
  • Detail Oriented.
  • Solid organizational abilities.
  • Proficient computer skills.
  • The ability to cleanly and concisely communicate to diverse groups at all levels, internally and externally.
  • Be able to bring diverse groups together to a common goal and work through issues to fins consensus solutions.
  • Think and work independently while also sharing ideas and working toward team goals.
  • Self-motivation and the ability to achieve goals independently.

Pay Range:

$122,979 - $184,453 per year
