Job description
Smithers Environmental Risk Sciences division is seeking a Senior Research Scientist in the Environmental Fate and Metabolism Department at our Wareham, MA location.
Candidates should have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or possess an equivalent combination of graduate level education and experience.
The Senior Research Scientist is expected to have experience working with radiolabeled (mainly C-14) compounds and familiarity with most types of study design/methodologies in Environmental Fate and Plant Metabolism.
As a Senior Research Scientist you will be familiar with conducting all work in compliance with applicable Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) regulatory requirements governing the work in which they are involved. Individual may be responsible for direct supervision of a limited number of laboratory technical staff, including their career development, technical training and scheduling. The individual must possess proven management and training/coaching skills and be able to maintain efficient communication and work processes within and across teams as well as implement management directives in a fast and efficient manner. The Senior Research Scientist will be required to technically review, and in some cases, write reports and will provide training and mentorship to junior staff members.
The Senior Research Scientist is a leading technical expert and experienced study director within the Environmental Fate and Metabolism department. The position is responsible for the study direction and data interpretation of a broad range of studies. Responsible for accurately conducting studies per appropriate regulatory guidelines within the expected time frame and within the allotted budget.
The Senior Research Scientist, is expected to develop test systems, methods and study designs quickly for a variety of standard Fate studies including plant metabolism, biodegradation, abiotic degradation and mobility studies (e.g., hydrolysis, photolysis and adsorption/desorption tests). The position executes and troubleshoots the respective designs while maintaining customer requirements and timelines. Individual is expected to perform and understand all related tasks associated with the studies performed, including laboratory techniques and instrumentation troubleshooting, review of data records, statistical analyses of data and technical writing/review of study reports. Supervision of professional and technical staff including reviews, promotions and utilization may be applicable. Position also includes training responsibilities for technical staff. The position liaisons effectively with supporting departments and communicates with Study Sponsors, peer groups, and regulatory agencies on behalf of Smithers. The Research Director may support the Director with financial metrics and related tasks.
Duties:
1. Validates and develops new testing methodologies.
2. Study Director for Fate and metabolism studies.
3. Performs all laboratory testing for assigned studies, both independently or assisted.
4. Performs data handling and calculation of results.
5. Supervises/manages and trains staff.
6. Provides summaries to program supervisors and clients.
7. Interprets data and writes reports.
8. Provide guidance and support for facility functions (e.g., Safety Committee, Hazardous Waste Committee, etc.)
9. Proven proficiency in working with management to align business goals with department processes.
10. Excellent project management skills.
11. May order chemicals and supplies for the department.
12. Additional duties as assigned.
