Montana State University-Northern (Northern), located in north-central Montana, seeks a Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs/Provost who will embrace Northern’s commitment to its unique academic and hands-on learning environment. Northern provides its students with higher education for professional and technical careers and serves an area that includes four Native American reservations along with Montana’s smallest and largest towns. The University functions as an important cultural resource and continuing education center.
The Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs/Provost (VCAA/Provost) will lead the institution in providing well-educated graduates who are ready to take their skills, competencies, and knowledge into the workforce. Northern seeks an education visionary committed to enhancing the economic and social mobility of our student population.
The VCAA/Provost will oversee the planning, implementation, and assessment of academic programming. This programming will meet the needs of students, industry, and geographic region; will provide academic facilities that allow faculty and students to access current technologies in aesthetically pleasing and safe spaces; will support professional development for faculty; and will deliver scheduling so that students can achieve their goals and complete their degrees in a timely manner ( Strategic Plan). In order to present an educational experience that enriches student and faculty lives, the VCAA/Provost will collaborate with industry, alumni, community, and campus partners.
As a campus leader, the VCAA/Provost will support the strategic goals of academic affairs, student affairs, enrollment management, athletics, administration and finance, and facility services. Representing Northern, the VCAA/Provost will encourage faculty, staff, students, and stakeholders to support one another in achieving the All ‘N’ Strategic Plan 2021-2031 goals.
In Academic Affairs, experienced academic deans, knowledgeable college chairs, and engaged faculty provide the foundation for MSU-Northern’s mission fulfillment and the institution’s commitment to students. In addition, the Office of Teaching and Learning Excellence (OTLE) supports faculty sharing best practices in curriculum development, pedagogy, academic program review, and educational technology.
Across the institution, federally funded TRiO Grant Student Support Services (SSS) serves first generation students, economically challenged students, and students with disabilities. The Little River Institute (LRI), under a federal Native American Serving Non-Tribal Institution grant, provides culturally appropriate academic and personal support for American Indian students and offers professional development opportunities for MSU-Northern faculty and staff. Tutoring Central involves faculty in tutoring decisions and training, along with peer tutors working with students. Student Affairs programming and residence life offer holistic educational approaches to student development and engagement. Athletic teams and coaches work to ensure academic success for MSUN student-athletes. The VCAA/Provost will experience an institution that supports its students in meeting their academic and personal goals.
The Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs/Provost will be innovative and strong in creating compelling strategies to meet today’s higher education challenges. The VCAA/Provost will support the students whom Northern serves and will grow academic programs that allow students to successfully thrive in the ever-changing work world and in their lives beyond work.



Duties and Responsibilities
Key duties including but are not limited to the following:

  • Advise the Chancellor on all matters relating to the university’s academic functions and the institution’s mission and strategic plan.
  • Provides academic and executive level leadership and supervision for all academic programs and educational support services in the following areas:

a. Provide guidance, leadership and motivation for all faculty and staff within undergraduate, graduate, continuing education programs, and educational support areas,
b. Set standards for assessing the qualify of programs, teaching of the curriculum, and student learning,
c. Provide strong leadership to ensure that all programs meet the standards of the accrediting bodies,
d. Coordinate and manage, with the Vice Chancellor of Administration and Finance, the budget development of various colleges and academic support services. Prepare the annual budget recommendations for these areas,
e. Promote excellence and enhance academic instruction, research, scholarship, creative activity, public service, and the diversity of the institution,
f. Manage the preparation and accuracy of the academic schedule,
g. Manage low-enrolled academic programs and use data-driven justification for action plans,
h. Manage annual academic program reviews,
i. Conduct faculty performance reviews and promotion and tenure process per the Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement,
j. Review all academic grants, contracts, and articulation agreements.
6. Authorize and oversee faculty overload, alternative delivery, and adjunct assignments and compensation decisions.
7. Provide reports to Leadership including productivity, faculty load, turnover rates, overall program health, and departmental updates.
8. Identify new sources of revenue to support existing programs and provide leadership for the creation and funding of new programs, which foster the mission and goals of the university.
9. Oversee the Assessment Committee, Deans’ Council, and Professional Education Unit.
10. Attend committee meetings as directed by policy and Chancellor.
11. Participate in faculty union contract negotiations.
12. Participate in public relations activities that foster external relationships that further the mission and goals of the university.
13. Represent MSU-Northern Academic programs at Board of Regents (BOR) and Chief Academic Officers (CAO) meetings.
14. Manage academic reporting to the Northwest Commission on College and Universities (NWCCU), Board of Regents (BOR), Office of the Commissioner of Higher Education (OCHE) and Montana State University.
15. Participate in the campus-wide process of strategic planning and implementation.
16. Perform other duties and responsibilities as required to further the mission and goals of the institution.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Earned doctorate.
  • Leadership experience demonstrating successful oversight, supervision, and strategic planning responsibilities.
  • Achieved academic rank through record of teaching and scholarship in an academic program.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Demonstrated experience with regional accreditation reporting and requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience with policy development.
  • Demonstrated budgeting experience.
  • Experience at state agency or institution of higher education.
  • Demonstrated experience with hiring, review, and termination of employees.
  • Grant management and reporting experience.
  • Experience working with collective bargaining units for faculty and staff.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equality.
  • Familiarity with institutional research as it relates to enrollment, retention, and graduation rates.
  • Familiarity with current technology as it relates to excellence in teaching and learning.

Title IX Coordinator

The Title IX Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the University’s compliance with federal and state discrimination and harassment laws, including Title IX. The Title IX Coordinator oversees compliance with the University’s Discrimination and Grievance Policy. Specifically, the Title IX Coordinator:
  • Coordinates educational programs and trainings regarding discrimination and harassment prevention for students and employees;
  • Responds to and seeks to resolve reports of discrimination and harassment following the Procedures;
  • Provides information about and, if requested, assists with criminal reporting;
  • Provides information about resources for obtaining advocacy, healthcare, and counseling services; and
  • Coordinates supportive and protective measures for members of the MSUN community.
