Job description
Sergeants are the first line supervisor for security officers, responsible for the activities of the Campus Security staff during an assigned shift. Sergeants will plan, coordinate, prioritize, assign, supervise, and review the work assigned to all security department personnel under their supervision. This is a working supervisor position that is part of shift coverage, which at times includes working area patrols, performing investigations or conducting follow-up investigations.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Job duties specific to this position:
The following duties/functions are typical for this position. Sergeants may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address operational needs and changing practices.
After training, which may involve all shifts and days of the week, a regular shift assignment will be established. Additional hours may be required on occasion.
- Perform specific duties and functions as assigned by the Director of Security.
- Provide leadership and guidance to officers in order to enhance the mission of both the Department and College.
- Maintain continuity of information by debriefing previous shift, reviewing notices, and briefing assigned personnel about any security concerns, policy/procedure updates, special events, special orders, recent incident reports, conditions or concerns on campus.
- Perform periodic performance assessments on shift personnel to ensure that their assignments, duties and responsibilities are completed properly.
- Perform periodic inspections of personnel, vehicles and equipment.
- Provide feedback and constructive criticism regarding performance of assigned personnel.
- Immediately report complaints concerning misconduct or failure to properly perform job duties of any shift personnel to the Director of Security.
- Review all incident reports, logs, and other required shift paperwork for accuracy, legibility, and detail.
- Review and approve/disapprove time off requests.
- Take initial command of all major incidents that affect the safety and security of the College. Follow through until the successful resolution or until relieved of this responsibility by a superior.
- Carry out routine and investigative patrol duties, as well as other regular patrol responsibilities.
- Be familiar with and understand Departmental Policies and Procedures.
- Monitor work activities to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures.
- Regularly review procedures and make suggestions to improve and clarify policies and procedures or recommendations for new policies and procedures.
- Observe staff for positive behavior, and good interpersonal skills. Offer advice, encouragement, empathy, training, and counseling to improve these skills.
- Participate in and provide any required training.
- Maintain a level of physical fitness necessary to perform the principle job functions.
- Develop and improve working relationships with students, faculty, and staff.
- Insure that department resources are used effectively.
- As assigned - conduct investigations and inquiry into incidents involving violations of College policy, criminal offenses or suspicious circumstances. Submit comprehensive written reports on all such incidents.
- Perform other related duties as assigned or necessary for departmental operations including special projects or duties and mandatory overtime.
- Conduct a continuing review of assigned activities to identify problems and develop recommendations for improving services.
- Work/supervise College sponsored events.
- Operate and activate the College's emergency notification system.
- Perform dispatch duties when necessary.
- Supervise security dispatchers.
- Supervise work study students.

Job Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Excellent customer service skills
- Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
- Three years of security experience in a college or 5 years in an institutional setting with a high level of public contact.
- A certified academy trained police/peace officer with experience in supervision, community relations, crime prevention, or investigations may be substituted for the previously listed experience on a year for year basis.
- Be able to pass a background investigation
- Meet and maintain the requirements and training to be licensed and registered as a security guard in New York State.
- Valid New York State driver's license and a driving record which is aligned with the College's motor vehicle policy
- Be reliable and able to work independently. Must exercise good judgment and display sensitivity to the unique role that security plays in a college setting.
- Able to perform the physical duties of the job including but not limited to climbing stairs, crouching, walking, standing, or sitting for extended periods.
- Capable of working evenings, nights, weekends, holidays and in inclement weather.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Associate degree and/or Bachelor degree in Criminal Justice or related discipline preferred
- Training/experience in law enforcement, security, safety, and supervision is desirable.
