SUMMARY OF POSITION
Under general supervision, the Service Writer will process incoming requests for repair and generate/maintain work orders using a computerized work order system. The position will be engaging with customers and act as a liaison to vehicle user groups.

Essential Functions/Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Complies with all written City policies and procedures.
  • Adheres to assigned work schedule outlined in the City policies and procedures.
  • Receives work requests from customers, performs thorough vehicle inspection, and recommends additional services if needed and record meter hours/mileage.
  • Reviews work requests and opens work order.
  • Monitors work order progress and updates work status at the end of the day.
  • Reviews work orders for accuracy and completeness and closes work order at discretion of supervisor.
  • Conducts and participates in routine quick line services i.e. wiper replacement, bulb replacement, license plate and registration install.
  • Serves as the first point of contact for customers on the phone and in person.
  • Assist the Parts Specialist in picking up parts from vendors and receiving in inventory.
  • Maintains regular, reliable and punctual attendance; work hours are 8 am to 5 pm, subject to call outs.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Perform other duties as assigned or directed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND BEHAVIORS
  • Ability to embrace and embody the City’s core values of Respect, Integrity, Service, and Excellence (R.I.S.E.).
  • Knowledge of automotive systems and components.
  • Knowledge of workorder processing, maintenance scheduling and reports.
  • Knowledge of fleet management systems.
  • Basic Computer skills to utilize Microsoft Office, Excel, Word.
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with all levels of management, city officials, vendors, other government agencies, other employees and the general public.
  • Ability to read, write, understand and follow oral, written and technical instructions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing and negotiate with technical staff, consultants, contractors, governmental agencies, city management, and citizens.
  • Ability to act in a manner that is approachable, friendly and inviting.

Required Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Equivalent to a high school diploma or GED and two (2) years of experience in an automotive repair environment is required.

Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications may be an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Must pass a drug screen and background check.
  • Must have Class C Texas Driver’s License.

Physical Demands/Supplemental

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Tasks involve kneeling, stooping, crawling, extended standing, and other strains on the body. The ability to lift and/or exert force up to one hundred (100) pounds may be required one-third of the on-the-job time.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Often, work takes place in a non-climate-controlled environment, with exposure to noise, petroleum distillates, dust, and dirt. The employee works both indoors and outdoors and is exposed to inclement weather.
