Position Description

Harris County – Commissioner Precinct One has an opportunity for a Sign Shop Manager reporting to the Superintendent of Road & Bridge. The Sign Shop Manager is responsible for all aspects of the Sign Shop including: training and managing a team communicating daily tasks related to maintaining county roadway signage and all traffic related sign specifications including designing and fabricating traffic, general, and specialty signs.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists in the field with sign installation, barricade completion and establishing project requirements
  • Coordinates and maintains all traffic study requests and implements improvements
  • Works closely with Precinct One’s Park Managers in providing parking lot restriping and sign requests
  • Maintains adequate inventory levels
  • Submits purchase order requests; budgets
  • Communicates with internal and external stakeholders while ensuring that the subdivision complies with all applicable laws and regulations, including county safety standards
  • Provides assistance during emergency events (i.e., flooding, ice storm, etc.)

Requirements

Education:

  • High School diploma or equivalent from an accredited educational institution
Experience:
  • Seven (7) years of experience coaching and leading employees
  • Proficiency in Microsoft software applications that could include Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):
  • Knowledge of leadership skills, principles, methods, practices, materials, equipment, traffic control and tools used in traffic maintenance operations
  • Ability to document activities both written and electronic; utilize work order management system
  • Ability to gain knowledge of Harris County specifications and drawings & Texas/Federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Device
  • Works in a professional manner with all levels of management, staff, and public

Preferences

  • Seven (7) years of multi platform design and/or sign fabrication experience
  • Five (5) years of traffic related experience
  • Experience operating a sign printer
  • SAI Flexi Clearview or similar traffic sign making software

General Information

Hours:

  • Regular Full-Time
  • 7:00 – 3:30 and are subject to change as needed
  • On call duty is required three times a year to assist the Road & Bridge subdivision with emergency calls related to roadway hazards.

Salary:
  • $68,556.80 - $97,884.80 per year
  • Based on experience and skills
  • Based on 26 Pay Periods

Physical Demands:
  • Frequently required to walk, sit, talk, drive, hear, bend, stoop, twist, and balance. Occasionally required to climb a 6-foot ladder.
Work Environment:
  • Work is on active construction sites involving pervasive hazards associated with heavy equipment and tool operations; speeding traffic; loud and constant noise; and regular exposure to chemicals, dust, fumes, and combustible materials
  • Required to work outdoors on varied and often unstable terrain involving exposure to varying weather conditions of extreme hot and cold temperatures.
  • Some working conditions require special precautions and the use of protective gear (e.g., hard hats, respirator masks, gloves, etc.)

About the Road & Bridge Division

The Road & Bridge Department’s mission is to offer a responsive public service while executing a high level of maintenance on Precinct One roads, bridges, hike and bike trails, and county rights-of-way, to improve mobility and the quality of life for the constituents of Precinct One.

About Precinct One

There are four precincts in Harris County. The four elected commissioners, along with an elected county judge, serve as members of Harris County Commissioners Court, the administrative head of the county’s government.
With approximately 1.1 million residents, Harris County Precinct One is a diverse, urban precinct that covers 363 square miles. Precinct One’s multi-racial, multi-ethnic population is roughly 39 percent African American, 37 percent Latino, 18 percent Anglo, 5 percent Asian and 1 percent other.
Precinct One, which includes 991 miles of road, stretches south to Brazoria County and reaches into eastern and northern sections of Harris County.
