Job Purpose

The Software Developer I is responsible for new application development, assists with supporting existing applications, and perform system enhancements. Collaborates in a team atmosphere to deliver business value.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Supports best method or mix of methods for delivering on business value based on research questions, timeline and resourcing.

  • Utilizes standard operating procedures (SOPs), training documentation and Jackson approved technical standards.

  • Collaborates with team members to understand problems, recommend solutions, escalate production issues, and provide full transparency into current workload.

  • Awareness of various risk mitigation recovery plans based on the severity of the issue and the impact on service level agreements.

  • Achieves personal goals by meeting or exceeding team commitment deadlines, anticipating and communicating potential project risks, applying experience and knowledge to new assignments, becoming proficient in pertinent toolsets.

  • Demonstrates a solid understanding of Jackson business and works productively with stakeholders to refine user stories, validate acceptance criteria, and prioritize/remediate issues.

  • Demonstrates ability to perform data analysis and identify data elements needed to support business decisions.

  • Supports Agile values and principles.

  • Demonstrates a functional understanding of domain.

  • Adheres to quality and coding standards.

  • Employs development tools and working level knowledge of programming languages and technologies.

  • Applies programming standards and captures technical documentation.

  • Awareness of Architecture, Cloud, and DevOPS principals.

Other Duties

  • Provides trending and related support as needed.

  • Ability to work extended hours as needed.

  • Performs other duties and/or projects as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Basic knowledge of version control systems.

  • Adheres to all Jackson technical and architectural standards and procedures as necessary to ensure the timeliness and quality of all work.

  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills including presentation creation and delivery.

  • Proficient organizational skills; ability to prioritize individual tasks to meet commitments and deadlines.

  • Ability to organize, prioritize, coordinate, and handle multiple tasks and priorities, including appropriate follow up with minimum supervision.

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment with the ability to build consensus and positively influence others within and across the organization.

  • Ability to learn and maintain a comprehensive understanding of Jackson’s business and technology.

  • Acquires and maintains a working knowledge of Jackson processes and procedures across various departments.

  • Working knowledge of existing, new, and emerging technologies in a changing technical environment.

  • Demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills.

  • Demonstrated understanding of software delivery tools, techniques and methodologies including Lean, Agile, and/or SAFe.

  • Ability to identify gaps in process or current / future designs, suggesting possible solutions for continuous improvement when appropriate.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience and/or education required.

  • 1+ years years of relevant experience preferred.

  • Basic knowledge of at least one of the following development languages: JAVA, COBOL, C++, Perl, SQL, C#, Python, etc. required.

  • Experience with modern IDE, collaboration, coding, and quality development tools preferred.

  • Financial services experience and professional insurance designations preferred.

  • Experience in a mature and scaled Agile environment preferred.
