The Sr. Controls Engineer (Mechatronics) at ConMet is responsible for development, upgrades, and troubleshooting of machines and equipment used for component testing and product validation. This position requires a mix of mechanical, electrical, and software aptitudes, as well as strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Provides internal support for ConMet’s test engineers and technicians.

The Sr. Controls Engineer (Mechatronics) is part of the ConMet Technical Center, which provides R&D, design verification, and product validation support for the development of new products. Our team of engineers and technicians maintain over 70 specialized pieces of test equipment and are continuously developing innovative new capabilities to provide our customers with cutting edge products that provide value without sacrificing performance.

This is an on-site position located in scenic Vancouver, WA at ConMet's Test Center.

Key duties include:

  • Design, prototype, and specify test equipment and machines supporting internal product development and validation.
  • Integrate and debug equipment subsystems including control systems, motors, drives, electrical or pneumatic actuators, and sensors.
  • Create, improve, and maintain machine control and interface software/firmware.
  • Evaluate existing machine and equipment designs and identify areas of improvement.
  • Work with cross-function teams from other departments to develop new and innovative verification and validation methodologies.
  • Interface with various vendors for part sourcing and equipment fabrication.

Required Background & Experience

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or equivalent from an accredited college or university
  • Five or more years of engineering experience in a mechatronics related role.
  • Proven ability to investigate technical issues both analytically and hands-on

Preferred Experience

  • Industrial equipment integration, component testing experience and knowledge preferred.
  • Industrial software development experience (LabVIEW and Python preferred)
  • Broad technical knowledge of industrial systems including:
  • Analog and digital data acquisition systems
  • Industrial networking and communication protocols including Modbus TCP and OPCUA,
  • Serial communication protocols including CAN/J1939, Modbus
  • Embedded prototyping (Arduino / Embedded Linux)
  • Machine design / power transmission
  • Pneumatic control circuits
  • Servo actuators (Electric, Pneumatic, Hydraulic)
  • Experience with machine condition monitoring
  • Knowledge of and experience with Control System theory and implementation
  • Hands-on mechanical/electrical assembly or mechanical/electrical repair work.
