The YMCA of Greater New York is here for all New Yorkers — to empower youth, improve health, and strengthen community. Founded in 1852, today the Y serves a diverse population of more than half a million New Yorkers who learn, grow, and thrive through programs and services at our 24 branches. Community is the cornerstone of the Y. Together, we connect active, engaged New Yorkers to build stronger communities.
The YMCA of Greater New York is seeking a Staff Accountant who will be responsible for the preparation and reporting of the financial records and reports of government awards, providing information to Association staff and YMCA Branches. In addition, the Staff Accountant will assist with both internal and external government grant audits.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare and submit monthly government billings for each assigned branch and grants in a timely manner.
- Communicate with business managers and program directors regularly to go over the unbillable items and resolve the variances.
- Assist with document preparation for all government contract, uniform guidance, state, and financial statement audits.
- Assist with the close out process for all contracts as needed.
- Coordinate with team members to research and resolve accounting issues.
- Assist branch staff with budgets and submit budget modifications as soon as they become available.
- Provide technical support to the Business Managers and Program Directors on contract budget management.
- Other activities and duties as needed that address the ongoing health and well-being of our staff and members.
- Maintain sanitary habits in accordance with CDC guidelines.
- Other duties as directed.
Desired Skills & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
- One to two years of accounting experience. Government contract and not for profit accounting experience is desired.
- Experience working with various government agencies on the State and NYC level (NYOCFS, SED, DYCD, DOHMH, DFTA) is a plus.
- Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail required.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite. Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (i.e., pivot table, vlookup, sumif).
- Experience with Oracle a plus.
We offer an exciting and innovative work environment with an organizational culture committed to serving all members of our community. As a leading not-for-profit, community service organization, our Association relies heavily on fundraising to support the wide range of programs we proudly provide the communities we serve. Our expectation is that all staff promote participation of their branch fundraising efforts in some capacity.
