SCOPE OF POSITION: Operate on site medical station under written standing orders, distribute and record staff and camper medications, serve as on-site advisor for hospital visits.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • Qualifying certification for camp and conference facility as listed in state organizational rules, as follows (Must be one of the following):
    • A physician licensed in Oregon.
    • A registered nurse licensed in Oregon.
    • A practical nurse licensed in Oregon.
    • A national Athletic Trainers Association certified trainer.
    • A person currently certified as completing the American Red Cross Emergency Response Course or equivalent.
    • A person currently certified as completing Wilderness Advance First Aid, or better, from a national recognized provider.
    • A currently military medical corpsman.
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License.
  • 2 seasons of summer camp experience or 1 year in equivalent work required.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Administer health history and immunization record intake and review provided medical history during the registration of all arriving campers.
  • Inform, in writing, the food service manager of all documented food allergies/intolerance/disease.
  • Inform, in writing, counselors of medical concerns/issues regarding campers.
  • Administer all medication to campers and staff daily during sessions as indicated by prescriptions.
  • Administer first aid and care for minor illnesses and advise if offsite treatment is needed.
  • Facilitate over-night care for ill or injured campers in the nurse’s station.
  • Notify parents of the incidents involving their child at camp by phone, letter, or sending a copy of their “History at Camp” form as soon as possible.
  • Keep accurate records: Medication Administration Record (MAR) forms, daily medical log, camper medical history, incident reports.
  • Secure Nurses Station whenever not in use: both building entrance and inner medical room doors.
  • Upkeep Nurses Station with the assistance of service crew: sanitize, launder bedding, dispose of medical waste.
  • Keep an ongoing and accurate inventory of all health and medical supplies, ordering as needed.
  • Stock and issue first-aid kits to assigned personnel.

General Duties:

  • Foster and nurture Christian faith and discipleship in visible, fruitful ways to campers
  • Attend and participate in programs and spiritual activities.
  • Enforce respect for personal property, camp equipment and facilities.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with all staff, volunteers, and campers.
  • Enforce adherence to camp and Salvation Army policies and procedures.
  • Ensure and provide supervision and physical/emotional safety for campers and staff.
  • Participate and/or assist in all summer camp programs as required e.g., chapel, staff meetings, campfire, camp wide games, night-watch, free-time, electives, rise and shine duty, etc.
  • Ensure and assist in the cleanliness of cabins and outside areas.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the Youth Program Specialist, Divisional Youth Secretaries and/or Camp Administrator

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, hike and twist on a continuous basis for up to 15-20 minutes or prolonged periods at a time.
  • Ability to grasp, push, pull objects, such as files, file cabinets drawers, and reach overhead.
  • Ability to lift, unload, and move medical supplies and medication storage containers.
  • Can run up to 0.25 miles in under five minutes to get additional help if required.
  • Can roll a person (up to 200lbs) onto their side.
  • Can wear common healthcare latex and vinyl gloves.
  • Ability to lift to 25 lbs. on occasion up to 50 lbs.
  • Physical ability to respond to a variety of situations; must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • There may be phone and in-person contact with others from diverse backgrounds who may be angry, hostile, confused or frustrated.
  • May be required to work in all areas of camp including, but not limited to, the kitchen, dish room, laundry facility and grounds.

MISCELLANEOUS:

The Salvation Army does have a dress code. This will be shared with you at the time of employment.

The candidate chosen for this position will be required to pass a motor vehicle record check. They must have a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
