Job description
The Surgical Scrub Tech handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. They have an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon. They have the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and is constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field.
Essential Functions:
- Checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedure.
- Scrubs, gowns, and gloves.
- Sets up table, blocks and mayo stand with instruments, supplies, equipment, medications and solutions needed for procedure.
- Performs appropriate counts with circulator prior to the operation and before incision is closed
- Performs thorough prep of surgical site(s) and drapes sterile field.
- Passes instruments, etc., to surgeon during procedure.
- Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during procedure.
- Prepares sterile dressings.
- Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization.
- Performs weekly terminal cleaning of operating room.
- Assists in turn-over cleaning and prepping room for next patient.
- Day-to-day hands-on patient care including but not limited to assisting with patient transfer to and from the OR bed, rooming patients and obtaining vital signs.
- Provide clinical and technical support for patients undergoing oocyte retrieval and embryo transfers.
- Receptionist duties, check in patients and surgery scheduling.
- Restocks supplies and alerts the nurse manager if consumable surgery items are needed.
- Sterilization of surgical instruments and maintains infection control policies.
- Be a resource for staff and physicians.
- Provides compassionate care to the surgical patient.
- Prepares operating room and procedure rooms as well as sets up sterile embryo transfer trays.
- Orients new staff as requested by the nurse manager.
- Assists with reception duties including post-op calls, telephone triage, and help with ordering needed supplies to maintain the proper functions of the surgery center.
- Maintain BLS training.
- Other duties as assigned.

- Must have excellent customer service skills along with good communication skills. Also must possess a high level of independent judgement and accuracy. Must demonstrate problem solving skills related to technical situations in the OR.
- Must have excellent communication skills and make it a priority to consistently communicate positively and professionally with all staff members and patients.
- Must demonstrate skills and knowledge in the care of patients.
- Must have the ability to function independently and seek assistance from the physicians and team members as needed.
- Strong computer skills with the ability to use basic office equipment.
- Demonstrate the ability to be a team player and possess a willingness to perform duties that are assigned or delegated to them as well as a willingness to perform duties of other employees as needed if within scope of practice.

Education and Experience
- Associate Degree, Diploma from an accredited school, preferred.
- Current Surgical Technologist certificate.
- Surgical technologists graduate from surgical technology programs accredited through ARC/STSA, a collaborative effort of AST and ACS, by CAAHEP. CAAHEP is a recognized accreditation agency of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
- Current BLS certification.
- A minimum of one year of previous experience related to the operating room.

Working Conditions
This job operated in a professional office and OR setting with daily use of surgical instrumentation and equipment; daily use of chemicals such as Formalin, Prolystica, Sani-Wipes, Revital-Ox Recert, daily use of medical supplies, sharps, equipment and materials. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, including computer keyboards and mice; telephones; photocopiers; scanners; filing cabinets.
The duties of this position involves a potential for mucous membrane or skin contact with blood, body fluids or tissues or a potential for spills or splashes of them. Appropriate protective measures are required for every employee engaged in these tasks. The duties of this position also involves occasionally exerting 75 pounds of force, and/or up to 35 pounds of force frequently.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, see and hear. The employee is frequently required to stand and walk; will occasionally sit; use hands and fingers to grasp, pick, pinch, type; and reach with hands and arms. Employee is required to have close visual acuity to perform activities such as: loading and clipping sutures, measuring medications/fluids, operation of operating room equipment and machines as well as sterile processing equipment and machines.
