Job description

Pre/Post procedure RN with sedation experience to administer diligent care to outpatients via monitoring, assessment, intervention, and continuous reassessment. The RN will provide care for pre/post-procedure patients recovering from mild-moderate sedation and administer/manage sedation during outpatient procedures.

Pre/Post Procedure Duties

  • Assess, instruct & prepare patients prior to vascular intervention
  • Ensure that operative and informed consents are signed and correct
  • Take and record vital statistics of patients to ensure readiness for vascular procedure
  • Initiate IVs and ensure patients are informed about procedure
  • Assess patients’ post-operative condition
  • Monitor vital signs and other measurements of progress, meeting discharge criteria
  • Log all findings in patient files
  • Answer patient questions and ensure patient comfort
  • Monitor patients for condition changes, reporting any changes to physician
  • Perform intervention duties during post-operative emergencies

The registered nurse managing the care of patients receiving sedation/analgesia is able to:

  • Demonstrate the acquired knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, cardiac arrhythmia recognition and complications related to sedation/analgesia and medications.
  • Assess total patient care requirements before and during the administration of sedation/analgesia including the recovery phase.
  • Understand the principles of oxygen delivery, respiratory physiology, transport and uptake, and demonstrate the ability to use oxygen delivery devices.
  • Recognize potential complications of sedation/analgesia for each type of agent being administered.
  • Possess the requisite knowledge and skills to assess, diagnose and intervene in the event of complications or undesired outcomes and to institute nursing interventions in compliance with orders (including standing orders) or institutional protocols or guidelines.
  • Demonstrate competency, through ACLS or PALS or appropriate competency assessment, in airway management and resuscitation appropriate to the age of the patient and to meet facility requirements.
