The preferred candidate will have an interest in working in a dynamic and collaborative global design environment with a diverse range of public assembly building types, including the design of sports venues, convention centers, community buildings and transportation facilities.

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES

Business Development

  • Lead and grow a sustainability advisory as a source of revenue for the practice, while utilizing architectural, interior, and landscape, and brand activation teams’ talent + recruiting/training key members of staff across all teams
  • Lead the practice of sustainability external engagement while working with the Board of Directors for the Americas region, EcoPOP and Marketing
  • Drive, audit and administer environmental commitments compliance and certification for the Americas region
  • Identify key areas of research and lead in-house execution, as well as external partnerships and marketing
  • Author publications with the aim of popularizing all sustainability-focused achievements of the practice
  • Set achievable internal goals along the path to (net) zero

Projects

  • Work with project team sustainability champions to review project sustainability goals
  • Work with project teams to align project along path to LEED or other sustainability rating certification
  • Create documentation for all LEED project pursuits
  • Initiate and lead charrettes for LEED project teams
  • Track and report project design performance expectations internally towards AIA 2030 Challenge reporting
  • Drive and influence the future sustainability trends associated with our building typologies
  • Lead sustainability advisory projects
  • Form and lead a team undertaking formal sustainability reviews of all major projects at all AIA defined project design stages
  • Lead a sustainability research group instigating small test projects, driving live project research, environmental analysis and design workflows. Research group members to take active design role in all major projects from competition to late design stages and regularly discuss undergoing design work with the Sustainability Design Leader
  • Create a network of external consultants to be brought in where in-house capabilities are insufficient
  • Track and report project pursuits relative to sustainability for Marketing
  • Oversee the quality of all evidence submitted by Populous for LEED assessments
  • Oversee the creation of a sustainability design guide for each relevant, major building type
  • Deliver life cycle assessments and carbon costing exercises

People

  • Provide sustainability education, specific to the range of roles and seniority levels across the practice, strategically aligned with project requirements and client pursuits
  • Develop and deliver a process for internal knowledge exchange and staff enrolment in external educational courses
  • Identify R&D streams, both undergoing or future, to be investigated further, resourced, shared internally and externally
  • Administer and oversee the payment of all BREEAM, LEED AP, and all future sustainability-driven staff subscriptions
  • Provide recruiting talent with a focus on sustainability - designers, analysts, and coordinators

JOB SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent and 10 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination
  • A strong and proven track record of leading the Sustainability agenda, and of driving tangible change
  • A background in creative environmental design (not necessarily architecture, but involving in creative thinking)
  • Experience working in the role of sustainability leadership
  • Proven track record in R&D, relationships with academic institutions, presenter at conferences, published work (papers, articles, books)
  • LEED recognized qualification
  • Understanding of various environmental analysis tools, ability to interpret results
  • Leadership and managerial skills, including managing their own follow-through
  • Demonstrated dynamic presentation skills within casual and structured formats
  • Possesses an energetic, positive attitude and the ability to be proactive and resourceful
  • Understanding of complex digital models and design processes
