Salary & Schedule:
- Part-Time position,$20.75 — $26.75 per hour based on experience.
- Approximately 5-15 hours per week.
- Teaching artists are compensated for all scheduled hours working directly with youth as well as all approved planning, meeting, outreach and event hours.
Program Summary:
The YMCA Lighthouse Project mission is to develop young people that are creative, connected and ready for life after high school. The program is housed in a dedicated teen media arts center inside the Homewood-Brushton YMCA and provides year round programming and access to cutting-edge media technology.
Position Summary:
The YMCA Lighthouse Project seeks Teaching Artists with deep inclusion practices and experience serving black and LGBTQIA+ youth to join our team in delivering culturally responsive, project-based learning experiences to teens and young adults through in-person programming and virtual platforms. Teaching artists work to create brave, inclusive spaces for participants to build community, create self-affirming works and explore social justice issues that impact youth. Teaching artists will co-create and deliver media and art-making courses that meet weekly for 2-3 months and culminate in a final work that can be shared through performance or presentation. Lighthouse teaching artistry prioritizes technical skill-building on industry-standard equipment alongside interpersonal and social-emotional growth.
The YMCA Lighthouse Project seeks teaching artists with a demonstrated practice in one or more of the following disciplines:
- Visual arts/digital drawing
- Studio recording
- Podcasting
- Photography/video
- Fiber arts/fashion design
- Songwriting/poetry
- Afrofuturist art & storytelling
- Illustration/Anime
- Music production
Ideal candidates will have a strong background in lesson planning, facilitating discussion and supporting youth through creative processes. We particularly seek strong artist educators with passion and experience for empowering black and LGBTQ/gender non-conforming youth, and individuals who have an awareness of trauma informed, healing centered practices.
Responsibilities:
- Utilize your knowledge, experience and skills to develop and implement written lesson plans in collaboration with, or with support from other teaching artists and staff.
- Serve as a positive, engaging mentor for a diverse group of young people as they explore personal, social and global issues through the arts
- Maintain consistent communication with staff through scheduled meetings, email and by phone.
- Guide students through the creative process toward completion of an individual or collaborative shareable art product.
- Attend and support culminating performances, special events and outreach opportunities.
- Work with program staff to develop and implement evaluation tools to capture impacts, successes and challenges as reported from participants.
- Teach and model responsible use of program technology and equipment
Qualifications:
- Experience in creating lesson plans, facilitating inquiry-based discussions and leading hands-on media and art making with groups of diverse youth
- Demonstrated artistic practice in one or more of the disciplines listed above
- Commitment to community-building, safe spaces and trauma-informed practice
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to co-plan and co-teach with others
- Ability to independently lead a group of youth through discussion and art-making sessions
- Demonstrated ability to integrate youth interests with counter-narrative and social justice
- Positive attitude and highly motivated
- Adaptive and responsive to youth interests
- Punctual and consistent
Technical Qualifications:
- Visual Arts/Design/Photo-Video
- Proficiency in the Adobe Creative Suite or the Affinity Creative Software
- Music Production/Podcasting/Recording
- Proficiency in one of more of the following — Ableton Live, Reason Studios, Studio One, Logic Pro
All teaching artists
- Proficiency with Google Suite of applications
Education/Experience Requirements:
- High School Diploma required; bachelor’s degree or higher preferred
Physical Working Conditions:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to stand; walk on uneven surfaces; sit; handle or feel objects; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. The employee must be able to lift up to 25 pounds. The employee may be exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time.
