Maintains field and laboratory instruments; schedules and performs routine maintenance on equipment, schedules preventive maintenance visits on instruments with service contracts, provides technical instruction and training for students doing research and class projects that involve use of field and lab instrumentation; acts as a computer and software resource person; and helps ensure safe laboratory practices and foster a responsible laboratory culture. This person will have responsibility for the Geology department's wide array of instruments, including electronic surveying equipment, GPS data loggers, SEM, XRD, XRF, hand- held XRF, petrographic microscopes, rock sample preparation/mineral separation equipment, and fume hoods). The Technical Director reports to the Chair of the Geology Department. Opportunities will be supported for training in use of instrumentation and software through workshops at CC, provided by manufacturers of instrumentation, available at annual meetings, and through other means.

Responsibilities:
- Ensure that the Geology Departments laboratory instrumentation, field equipment, and computers are maintained and functioning.
- Perform or arrange for the routine maintenance of laboratory instruments, such as Panalytical Epsilon 4 benchtop XRF energy dispersive system, X-ray Diffractometer, and JEOL scanning electron microscope with EDS system, as well as maintaining sample preparation facilities (rock saws, rock crusher, disc mill, etc), the sedimentology lab, field geophysical and GIS equipment, etc.
- Assist students and paraprofessionals working in the geology laboratories on both independent research and class-based projects; in particular, instructing students and paraprofessionals on instrument use and procedures; including correct use and maintenance of departmental equipment.
- Co-develop and facilitate a variety of classroom, field and laboratory exercises that are integral to coursework within the department.
- Serve as a computer and electronic equipment resource, working with students and faculty on software applications, including those used for geology instruction and research; purchase, install, and maintain current licenses software applications for data analysis and graphics.
- Coordinate the work of student employee and paraprofessionals who are tasked to perform bi-annual cleaning and organization of rock sample preparation lab.
- Ensure that laboratory facilities and materials are organized, clean, accessible, and in good functioning order.
- Contribute to Geology Department media presence, social media communications, and web pages maintenance.
- Manage the safe storage and handling of laboratory chemicals used for analysis and research, and ensuring proper, safe disposal of those chemicals.

- Promote a culture of safety and environmental protection by working in a safe manner; immediately reporting unsafe situations and accidents; following college procedures; and participating in appropriate safety training.

Required Qualifications:
Graduate degree in Earth Science; experience in the use and maintenance of laboratory instrumentation and earth sciences/geospatial software applications, mechanical aptitude, supervision and leadership ability; familiarity with issues in higher education and appreciate the value of the study of earth sciences in in a residential liberal arts institution; ability to communicate effectively and develop positive relationships with people from different cultural backgrounds. Other important characteristics include personal integrity, curiosity, strong organizational and interpersonal skills, creativity, a commitment to diversity, plus the ability to work effectively with faculty and students.
Preferred Qualifications:
PhD in Geology or Geochemistry or an allied scientific discipline, and a minimum of two years of related work experience. Experience using and maintaining field and laboratory instrumentation and Earth sciences/geospatial software, mechanical and technical aptitude, and supervisory and leadership ability. Proficiency and experience using and maintaining: geochemical/analytical instrumentation and computer software, as well as a willingness to learn new skills. Familiarity with issues in higher education and appreciation of the value of the study of earth sciences at a residential liberal arts institution. Demonstrated problem solving abilities for hardware and software issues. Other important characteristics include personal integrity, curiosity, strong organizational and interpersonal skills, a commitment to diversity, plus the ability to work effectively with faculty and students.
