JOB TITLE: Traffic Control Technician

DEPARTMENT: Traffic Engineering

REPORTS TO: Superintendent

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt/Hourly/Unclassified

REVISION DATE: August 2022

SUMMARY:

This is a semi-skilled technical work in the construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic control devices.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Install, operate and perform maintenance of traffic signal equipment.
  • Install, inspect, troubleshoot, and repair street lighting systems of 480 volts or less.
  • Install and maintain pavement markings
  • Construct, install, inspect, clean and repair signs per the M.U.T.C.D.
  • Collect traffic data and perform traffic studies.
  • Identify and report traffic hazards.
  • Required to respond to emergency maintenance calls after duty hours.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required.
  • Work independently and as part of a team.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma or General Equivalency Degree (GED).
  • Shall have the ability to interpret and use schematics, diagrams, construction plans and drawings, manual, etc.
  • Shall have knowledge of machines, tools and vehicles, including their design, use, repair, and maintenance.
  • Shall have the ability to read and interpret documents, regulatory requirements, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, etc.
  • Shall have the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Shall have the ability to communicate effectively with co-workers, supervisors, and the public.
  • Shall have the ability to work at heights of 25 feet or more.
  • Effective time management skills and ability to meet and manage deadlines.
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks and manage several projects simultaneously.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

This position requires the use of a city owned vehicle while conducting city business. The employee must be physically capable of operating the vehicle safely and must possess a valid driver’s license. Employee shall possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License within one year from date of hire. Must obtain IMSA Level I certification in Traffic Signals within one year from date of hire.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand for a long period of time; bend, stoop, climb steps, stairs or ladders and move around work area. Must have the ability to work from an aerial lift/platform. Must have the ability to use hands and fingers to handle or feel and reach with arms. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 80 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian traffic, exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to high, precarious places and vibration, and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, outside weather conditions, and fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT:

Regularly use safety glasses, hard hat, ear plugs, gloves, LOTO lock, and steel-toed boots. Additional PPE such as face shield, fall protection, respirators, safety harnesses, etc.

This is a security and safety sensitive position.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $31,000.00 - $33,000.00 per year
