Position Purpose :
The Veterinarian is responsible for the health and well-being of Butterball’s turkey flocks to produce wholesome products efficiently and safely by conducting all necessary veterinary procedures.
Responsibilities/Duties/Functions/Tasks :
- Manage the Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma live operations veterinarian region for Butterball’s Carthage, MO complex (with up to 20% involvement in Butterball’s Huntsville, AR complex).
- Perform all necessary veterinary care and procedures for commercial turkeys grown in the assigned live operation region to insure their care, health, and well-being.
- Provide and document surveillance, clinical diagnostics, and treatment regimens for flocks.
- Provide oversight to ensure standard operating procedures for animal care and well-being are met.
- Act as a primary liaison with industry colleagues, customers, and regulatory agencies as needed.
- Provide guidance to Butterball live operations and processing associates to ensure efficient production of healthy birds for processing.
- Promote and support the Butterball Animal Care and Well-Being and Biosecurity programs by providing training, conducting internal audits, and coordinating third-party audits for program effectiveness and results.
- Research and analyze health challenges to develop and implement vaccination programs and intervention strategies.
- Generate grower and associate communications to share health trends and research conclusions.
- Analyze long term disease trends and provide recommendations for continuous improvement across the enterprise.
- Coordinate surveillance programs and work with diagnostic laboratory partners.
- Timely approval of prescriptions.
- Oversee antibiotic use and ensure treatment plans are documented, communicated, and followed.
- Assist in research projects and other duties as assigned.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Demonstrates knowledge of and compliance with the Animal Care and Well-Being and Biosecurity Policies and all associated procedures and protocols
- Advanced poultry health management skills
- Conducts all activity in compliance with appropriate veterinary practices
- Eligible for veterinary licensure for the states of Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas, with the requirement that licensure will be pursued in these states soon after employment
- Excellent animal handling skills
- Strong time management, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Microsoft Office suite; Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
- Good organizational skills
- Ability to travel up to 50% in state
- Ability to travel up to 20% out of state
- Occasional night and weekend work
Education and Experience:
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) required
- Additional poultry training or experience preferred
- Residency or Masters in poultry preferred
- Missouri Veterinary Licensed preferred
Work/Physical Requirements:
Driver’s license, lift up to 50 pounds, can work in wet, cold, hot, dusty environments with appropriate PPE
