The McConnell Group, www.themccgroup.com, a Health Science company, is sourcing candidates for a full-time Veterinarian position to support a contract with the 24th Special Operations Wing. Position is dependent on contract award. The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a veterinarian and consultant; develop and conduct continuing education courses to maintain proficiency in animal handling and care and treatment; and provide veterinary oversight and direct support to medical training consistent with the research and training regulations that governs animal care and use. Position will require temporary duty travel to other locations possibly for extended periods that may exceed 14 days per iteration.


Position Responsibilities:

  • Prescribe and administer medications, including controlled pharmaceuticals
  • Provide instructional briefings to students and trainees
  • Conduct physical examination of animals and perform routine surgical and post-mortem procedures
  • Obtain and interpret relevant clinical data and histories of affected animals and associate these with other findings
  • Monitor the results of medications, treatments, surgery, and manage changes for effectiveness and adjust treatment strategies as necessary
  • Evaluate and advise the regulated community regarding the humane handling, husbandry, maintenance, transportation, housing, and veterinary care of animals used in training
  • Ensure compliance with relevant veterinary regulations and laws
  • Perform routine sedation, anesthesia, patient preparation, surgery, patient monitoring and recovery
  • Euthanasia and disposal, when necessary
  • Assure compliance with AAALAC standards and Animal Welfare Act requirements
  • Knowledge and skills necessary in which to participate, establish, and maintain training programs as deemed required by the government representative to participate in established programs and in the development of new disease detection, control, and eradication concepts
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Must be a graduate of an AVMA accredited College of Veterinary Medicine
  • Possess an active and current Florida license. If licensed in another state, must obtain an active and current Florida Veterinary license within six months of job commencement.
  • At least 3 years of experience as a fully licensed practicing animal clinician and surgeon to preferably include experience with large animals
  • Effective verbal and written communication
  • Mastery of veterinary medical science concepts, principles and practices is required in anatomy, bacteriology, chemistry, epidemiology, immunology, microbiology, parasitology, pathology, pharmacology, physiology, serology, toxicology, virology, routine veterinary surgical procedures, patient sedation/anesthesia, preparation, monitoring and recovery, and other basic clinical sciences applicable to diagnosis, treatment, prevention, surveillance, and control of animals used in emergency and combat medical training programs
  • Knowledgeable and experienced in the detection, diagnosis, disposition, transmission, and epidemiology of animal conditions, including those that are zoonotic, foreign, or emerging, and those that may be transmitted by importing animals, animal products and by-products, and related materials; veterinary surgery to include pre-surgical care and preparation, anesthesia and procedural sedation, peri and intraoperative pain management, euthanasia and carcass disposal
  • Knowledgeable in routine husbandry practices and the use of various drugs, biologics, and pesticides and their effects upon animals used in medical training programs
  • Professional skill ordering and maintaining accounting records for controlled substance pharmaceuticals according to applicable state, federal and DoD regulations
  • Mastery of applicable regulations and guidelines required for the development and monitoring of animal support and animal acquisition, transportation, and holding, with emphasis on the AAALAC standards
  • Employee must meet all position requirements to include background check, secret security clearance (obtain and retain), psychological screening, and veterinarian training certifications
  • A current unrestricted, appropriate, valid driver's license is required for the position. A Government driver's license may be required to obtain after award.
  • Experience and confidence in driving and backing a vehicle while towing a large trailer is preferable.
