Position Overview
The Biology Department at The University of the South seeks a Ph.D. trained physiologist to serve as a visiting assistant professor of biology for the 2023-24 academic year; the position may be eligible for continuation or conversion to a tenure line. The Biology Department at the University of the South (Sewanee) is a vibrant intellectual environment consisting of 11 research-active faculty with broad interests. We offer a comprehensive biology curriculum with concentrations in Ecology and Biodiversity, Molecular Biology and Genetics, and Integrative Biology.
Position Description
The position carries a teaching load of 6 courses per year with both lecture and lab sections counting toward that total. While research and service are not required for this position, the successful applicant will have the option to develop a research program that provides opportunities for undergraduate involvement if that is conducive to their continuing professional development. Other professional development opportunities include access to a broad range of programming in our Center for Teaching and a sponsored research office.
Attributes of a Successful Candidate
The successful candidate will be able to teach anatomy and physiology courses and upper-level courses in their area of expertise. Comfort with neurobiology or cell/molecular biology would be a plus. Candidates should be enthusiastic about teaching small interactive classes at a liberal arts college.
