Job description
Provides journeyman level welding services to all University departments through industry standards in engineering, design, layout and fabrication procedures for all ferrous and non-ferrous materials.
Responsibilities
- Interprets drawings and engineering steps to create a project.
- Consults customers on design changes and answers questions regarding changes to the blue prints.
- Determines specific dimensions, materials load ratings, technical specifications and safety requirements for each project.
- Decides work processes and procedures to meet customer deadlines and cost limitations.
- Determines type of technical layout needed for each project (radial line, triangulation, round layout and bend allowances).
- Welds all ferrous and non-ferrous materials to certified standards.
- Sheetmetal Fabrication skills is a plus.
Problem Solving
Drawings or sketches are assigned to an incumbent and they are then fully responsible for the completion of the job. Direct changes from the specifications or drawings are decided between the welder, the supervisor and the customer.
The welder is responsible for determining the type of layout required to fabricate a job, the machinery to be used to create the best quality end product and the welding selection for strongest, most durable and timely production. These decisions are all made from previous apprenticeship theory and on the job training to the journeyman skill level.

Minimum Qualifications
Completion of an approved 4-year, 8,000+ hour accredited apprenticeship program or four years previous experience in Tig, Mig, and Arc required. The position also requires extensive experience in radial line, parallel, and triangulation layout procedures. Demonstrated human relation and effective communication skills are also required. Incumbents must have an understanding of Industrial Standards to determine strength and safety requirements. A One-hour comprehensive examination will be scheduled for evaluation of applicants. This position is NOT responsible for providing patient care.
Preferences
Experience in Sheetmetal Fabrication is a plus.
