GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Work in this class involves providing basic nutrition services to clients eligible for the Special Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infant, Children (WIC) in a local health department. Work requires the employees to independently complete a program eligibility statement, and a basic nutrition assessment. Employees are responsible for providing individual and small group nutrition counseling which is typically limited to such topics as the food groups, child development nutrition needs, and programmatic services. Work requires analyzing clinical and nutritional data in order to prescribe appropriate supplemental foods based upon the clients, nutritional needs and food preference. Employees may also execute contracts with vendors to honor the program food voucher and handle any problems that may occur. Employees may also train vendors and perform vendor monitoring. Usually, clients with complex nutrition and/or medical problems are referred to other health professionals or a higher level nutritionist. Employees may supervise the clerical support function associated with the program. Work may include other related assignments as determined by management. Either a higher level nutritionist, nursing director, or health director supervises work.

Examples of Duties

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Determines medical/nutritional eligibility for clients participating in the Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children WIC. Must follow federal regulations in determining eligibility and abide by state policy in providing services. Provide nutritional care and counseling for pregnant, postpartum and breastfeeding women, infants and preschool children. Interview clients/caretakers for socioeconomic information and medical/nutritional history. Collect objective data, assesses nutritional status and provides individual counseling. Following the assessment of nutritional status and counseling, prescribe a tailored food package to meet the client's nutritional needs. Teach nutrition education classes to groups of pregnant and breastfeeding women. Additional responsibilities may be assigned by the supervisor.

  • General knowledge of accepted nutritional and dietetic principles and practices.
  • Basic knowledge of foods and nutrition.
  • Basic knowledge of infant and child development.
  • Ability to maintain rapport with clients.
  • Ability to collect and assimilate information.
  • Ability to communicate and be persuasive.

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science degree in nutrition, dietetics, community nutrition or public health nutrition from a four-year accredited college or university; or graduation from a Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education – approved Didactic Program in Dietetics; or Dietetic Technician Registered with Commission on Accreditation for dietetics Education with a Bachelor's degree in any subject area from an accredited four –year college or university; OR, a bachelors degree in Home Economics with twelve hours in nutrition coursework with one year of experience in the field of nutrition, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Requirements: Must have knowledge of maternal and child nutrition, understanding of clinical guidelines and protocols and ability to provide nutrition education and counseling. Teaching and public speaking skills, as well as communication and interpersonal skills are necessary. An appreciation and understanding of family dynamics and nontraditional family units is helpful. Compassionate, supportive professionals are important in meeting the complex needs of this population. Travel to other sites and events may be necessary on occasion.

Documentation of immunity to: measles, mumps, rubella, and chickenpox, per CDC recommendations. Screening/proof of Hepatitis B immunity, as recommended by the CDC.
