Typical Hours Required: Monday - Friday 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM, evenings and weekends as needed


Shepherd's Door

Shepherd’s Door, Portland Rescue Mission’s women’s facility, is set in a retreat-like setting located in East Portland, designed specifically to support the transformation and growth of women, and women with children, impacted by homelessness and addiction. This 42,000 square foot facility has the capacity to serve 42 adults and 25 children.

General Description of Work

The Intake and Outreach Specialist will oversee recruitment and intake of participants for New Life Ministries at Shepherd’s Door. This person will be responsible for developing a program applicant pool through networking, presentation and communication with relevant agencies and organizations who are proven referral sources. Working in collaboration with PRM church relations team, the Intake and Outreach Specialist will maximize church referral so that the body of Christ is further equipped to serve homeless and addicted individuals. The Intake and Outreach Specialist is responsible to keep Shepherd’s Door at capacity with well fitted residents.

The Intake and Outreach Specialist should have a passion and gifting for networking, communication, presentation, and education of churches, agencies and organizations about Portland Rescue Mission’s New Life Ministries in order to keep Shepherd’s Door at capacity. This person should have a high level of gifting in relationship building, discernment, and administration.

Essential Functions

  • Build a network of contacts, referral sources and partners in order to develop and maintain consistent applicant intake so as to keep Shepherd’s Door full with a functional waiting list.
  • Be consistently relationally present with organizations, agencies and at network meetings in order to become a trusted place of referral for people in need of New Life Ministries.
  • Work in collaboration with church relations staff and volunteer team to equip churches for referral, ensuring clear channels of communication and response times.
  • Oversee program communication strategies and content to best communicate New Life Ministries to potential program candidates and referral sources.
  • Maintain and manage intake web presence so that interested program candidates have a clear path for getting help.
  • Ensure that applicants are immediately responded to and screened as soon as possible (less than 1 week on average from start to finish, less than 1 business response to phone calls).
  • Discern participant compatibility with program maintaining a healthy and balanced ministry environment.
  • Identify and step into key ministry opportunities with each intake applicant. Appropriately refer non-matching candidates to outside resources.
  • Oversee database entry, documentation and orientation of new participants ensuring that the staff and the participants are set up for success.
  • Communicate program census to staff and work alongside Life Skills team and Family Life Center to determine timing of move-ins.
  • Collaborate with New Life Ministries for Men and maintain consistent process and intake paperwork so that the intake process is clearly understood by each participant and Portland Rescue Mission remains safe.
  • Support Program operations such as UAs, med calls and any other duties that arise.

General Functions

  • Demonstrate and serve as a highly relational Christ-centered servant practicing the Spiritual Disciplines as a means to ongoing growth.
  • Consistently support and encourage the ongoing recovery and Christian discipleship of Shepherd’s Door women and children. Integrate recovery and discipleship into all facets of work.
  • Work as a team with the Shepherd’s Door staff to support the overall goals of each woman in the New Life Ministry.
  • Integrate and seek ministry cohesion with all Portland Rescue Mission ministries.
  • Provide support to Portland Rescue Mission in acting as liaison between PRM and the variety of businesses, organizations, community partners and churches, which support Portland Rescue Mission.
  • Support the ongoing Portland Rescue Mission effort to engage with Churches in order to train and leverage volunteers into significant ministry.
  • Participate in Portland Rescue Mission special events including meetings, retreats and events.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • College degree in related field or experience equivalent
  • Understanding of recovery issues and experience in the recovery environment
  • Exceptional ability to relationally engage and provide guidance to women in the midst of life crisis
  • Clear understanding of the gospel, able to share faith and communicate biblical concepts
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Competent in public speaking and able to tailor communication to match audience.
  • Experience in Microsoft Windows software
  • Enthusiastic self starter
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Creative and logical problem solving
  • Demonstrated ability to be a team player
  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs. unassisted
