AmeriCorps Members work directly with Program Directors and their community sites locations in where students are from Title I schools to close the academic achievement gap, prepare students for successful transition to middle school, and open a pathway to long-term academic and life success. For over 20 years City Gate has effectively worked “to open the gate” by providing children in underserved neighborhoods and public or subsidized housing communities the resources and opportunity they need to access the benefits of the larger society. This includes academic interventions, experiences that build social capital, and social and emotional learning. The latter is designed not only to support personal growth but develop classroom and community-based program environments which build relationships that bridge social diversity, help achieve educational equity, and mitigate the impact of structural racism. AmeriCorps Members will make a difference for the students they serve which impacts the larger community as well as providing each Member with an enriching experience of service and personal and professional growth.
Member Duties : Members serve as part of a team which works with the same group of students daily through the summer fo r8 hours M-F The schedule rotates between morning and afternoon sessions and includes 1) individual or group high impact tutoring; 2) a “novel study” group reading program which captures student interest, sustains engagement of all students regardless of academic level, and increases vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension; and 3) either rotating between art, sports, chess, etc. This schedule provides time for training in the tutoring and reading interventions, preparation, research, recording and analyzing student progress data, recruiting volunteer tutors or mentors, and other program or community- related projects.
