BECOME AN AMERICORPS CREW MEMBER!: Learn to Build houses with a team for lower income families in the city of New Orleans, and surrounding areas including building new homes for disaster survivors of Hurricane Ida down in Jean Lafitte.

ROLE: AmeriCorps Construction crew members play an integral part in building and repairing homes, leading to better neighborhoods and communities. As a construction crew member, you will work with a team in the fundamentals of hands-on construction as well as help lead and develop groups of skilled and unskilled volunteers and homeowner families in construction activities all while maintaining a safe, efficient work environment.

Using volunteer management techniques, you will manage volunteers and homeowner families as they assist in the building of new homes and/or repairing existing homes or completing weatherization projects. Together, you will perform hands-on construction tasks including, but not limited to, demolition, framing, siding, insulation, flooring, roofing, finish carpentry and landscaping.

DAY TO DAY: We build single family houses, and rental units from foundation to finish, using site supervisors on staff, AmeriCorps, sub-contractors, partner families, and volunteers.

- 5-day workweeks: Mon – Fri, or Tues- Sat (40hr weeks)

- Exterior and interior work in high temperatures and light rain

- Performing carpentry tasks on site with a supervisor and/or independently as well as help in leading, planning, and managing work

Compensation: 11 month/1700hr contract (10.5 months)

Stipend - $17,000 total/ $1545.00 per month (approximation - before taxes)

Housing Provided: Americorps members live in Habitat houses, sharing communal space but with their own bedrooms; utilities and Wi-Fi for $100 a month total

Education Award upon successful completion: $6,495

  • Ability to take initiative and be a leader

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to be on one's feet for extended periods of time
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs on a regular basis
  • Ability and confidence to work on ladders and heights up to two-stories
  • Ability and confidence working on single-story and two-story roofs
  • Ability to work in varying weather conditions - sites are not heated during winter and not air conditioned in the summer
  • Ability to work outdoors year round in temperatures from highs in the upper 90s and lows in the 30s

New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with hard working, low-income families in New Orleans to build and finance new, safe, affordable homes and apartments. The program makes homeownership possible for some families who are unable to qualify for traditional home loans but have a stable job, good or no credit, and the willingness to contribute hours of sweat equity to the building of Habitat homes. We also provide affordable rental options for families who can’t qualify for our homeownership program.

New Orleans continues to rebuild housing in areas destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, and by Hurricane Ida. New Orleans is a city with historically low rates of homeownership and high levels of poverty, yet it is a place of resiliency, hope, and cultural vibrancy. With a spirit of renewal, NOAHH is rising to the challenges presented by a substandard housing stock and is helping many to realize their dream of homeownership and affordable renting.
