Ames and Iowa City Editor

The Des Moines Register/desmoinesregister.com, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, seeks an experienced, digitally savvy coach to lead two talented, community-minded news staffs, at the Ames Tribune and Iowa City Press-Citizen.

This editor will be part of the Des Moines Register’s leadership team and will be based in Des Moines or elsewhere in Iowa, directing the two news staffs largely remotely, but with monthly or more frequent trips as needed to meet one-on-one with staff and members of the community.

Ames and Iowa City are vibrant, growing cities that are home to Iowa State University and the University of Iowa, respectively. And each paper has grown its digital subscriptions in the past year.

The ideal candidate will be someone who wants to be a top editor for a small staff and would enjoy providing a tightly focused local news report to readers in Iowa City, Ames and their surrounding counties, whose residents are hungry for coverage of their cities, schools, local businesses and vibrant entertainment scenes.

At the same time, this editor will have the support and backup of Register editors.

This editor will use metrics and audience research to guide decisions about covering topics and issues that will drive digital subscription orders through exclusive reporting.

A successful candidate will embrace the latest developments in video, digital technology and social media and will experiment with innovative approaches to build audience.

The job requires a problem solver who can work independently and take responsibility for coaching the Ames Tribune and Iowa City Press-Citizen staffs in producing trustworthy, important journalism.

Responsibilities:

• Have editing experience in a digitally focused newsroom.
• Know how to help reporters tell stories in real time and include alternate story forms and visual elements that drive the narrative.
• Understand how metrics and analytics can help us determine how to best reach our audience.
• Know how to turn readers into subscribers by helping reporters tell stories relevant to readers' lives.
• Be a teacher, not just an editor. After all, everyone needs a coach.
• Be courageous about experimentation.
• Be a team player who likes to collaborate with coworkers.

Requirements:

• Bachelor's or master’s in communications, journalism or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• 5 years of experience in journalism writing, editing or management roles.
• Solid news judgment and the ability to consistently produce clean copy, whether stories, captions or headlines.
• Top-notch organizational and time management skills.
• Command of media law and principles of ethical conduct.
• Experience editing and shaping watchdog and investigative journalism.
• Exceptional planning and organizational skills.
• Understanding of the use of metrics, social media and SEO.
• Self-motivation and self-direction.
• Ability to multi-task and excel under intense deadline pressure in a rapidly changing environment.
• Employment is contingent on passing a pre-employment, post-offer background check.
