Job description
The Office of General Counsel (OGC) is a team of approximately 40 professionals responsible for providing expert advice of counsel and legal representation to DCPS' Chancellor, Central Office, principals, and other school-based staff to help ensure that all DCPS students, regardless of background or circumstance, receive a world-class education that prepares them for success in college, career, and life. Major practice areas in OGC include: Labor and Employment, General Practice, which includes FOIA, FERPA, policy and legislation, and Litigation, which includes special education due process litigation under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 (IDEA). OGC also includes the Labor Management and Employee Relations (LMER) team.
The Labor Management & Employee Relations (LMER) work group is responsible for supporting DCPS on a wide range of employee relations matters, including but not limited to: ensuring compliance with EEO laws; facilitating the proper implementation of progressive discipline; assisting employees with workplace problems; collaborating with unions to resolve issues and address concerns; working with managers to ensure compliance with all laws, regulations, and policies; scheduling meditations and hearings to address grievances; investigating allegations of misconduct by employees, contractors, and volunteers; and conducting background investigations to determine suitability for DCPS employment and service providers.
The Assistant, Compliance Investigations will be responsible for performing administrative, program, and technical work to support the Investigations Division. In addition to managing daily office operations, the Assistant, Compliance Investigations will complete a variety of clerical work in support of various investigations-related projects.
The Assistant, Compliance Investigations will report to the Director, Compliance Investigations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

- Handles general administrative duties, including maintaining office systems and database management.
- Creates investigative files for investigators and maintains investigation records upon submission.
- Creates investigation case profiles in the investigation database, monitors case progression, and pulls data upon request from LMER/OGC management.
- Serves as the office liaison for vendors, including intra-agency stakeholders.
- Serves as assistant to the Investigation Division Director.
- Prepares correspondence for investigation notifications and creates data reports monitoring case progression.
- Collects and submits monthly vehicle use logs on behalf of the Investigation Division.
- Maintains the supply budget and supply inventory for the Investigation Division including liaising with the OGC procurement contact to submit supply requests and invoices.
- Works under tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment with multiple responsibilities and responds in a timely manner to urgent requests that may arise from multiple DCPS stakeholders, including OGC, LMER, School Based Staff, and Unions.
Qualifications
- Associate’s degree OR one year of experience.
- Previous exposure to or experience in the education sector a plus.
- Previous exposure to or experience working with administrative and background investigations.
