Position Summary
Oregon Tech’s Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) department seeks applicants for a full time, 12-month tenure track faculty position to start in September 2022. The focus of this position is the instruction of students in a NAACLS accredited BS Medical Laboratory Science program. Candidates must have a strong desire to teach both lecture and laboratory courses and expertise in all areas of medical laboratory chemistry and immunology. Experience as a generalist that can teach in other areas of the MLS curriculum is beneficial. Candidates should be able to develop curriculum materials including laboratory activities, evaluate student achievement and assess curriculum effectiveness.

All MLS faculty and staff work as a team to administer the MLS program, focusing on student success. Faculty responsibilities include program development and assessment, student recruitment, advising, and other assigned duties related to and in support of the mission, goals and strategic objectives of the program / university.

Students spend 12 months on the Portland Metro campus and an extended 5th term at one of over 65 clinical externship sites. Faculty participate in establishing and supervising student clinical externship experiences.

We have the only bachelor’s degree level MLS program in the state of Oregon. We are a joint program with Oregon Health and Science University. Dedicated faculty and the hands on nature of the program, ensure that students are well prepared to be successful in their careers.

Faculty are expected to actively engage in scholarly work which may include but is not limited to participation in local, state, and national professional organizations, applied research, publications, exhibitions, presentations, professional development and continuing education.

Department Summary
The Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science (BS MLS) is offered through a joint partnership between Oregon Tech and Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU). As the only program of its kind in Oregon and the largest in the Pacific Northwest region, we offer a rigorous and unique education that prepares graduates for career success. Designed around intensive coursework in biology and chemistry, specialized study of the immune system, body chemistry, and the hematological system. Our students are prepared to be the best MLS professionals around.

To make sure our graduates are adept and self-assured professionals, BS MLS students participate in 12 months of didactic and student lab experiences. This is followed by a 2 week simulated laboratory before entering an extensive externship program. This clinical experience, which requires 40 hours per-week for 12 weeks of applied study and training, allows students to perform a wide variety of testing in a contemporary, accredited medical laboratory and to further develop and refine skills and competencies under the guidance of clinical instructors. We offer externship sites in accredited laboratories in Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Idaho, Hawaii, Arizona, Colorado, and Alaska.

Students who successfully complete the degree program are eligible to take the Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) national board certification examination offered by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP). Program pass rates and student mean scores are consistently higher than the national average.

Additional Requirements

  • Current nationally recognized certification in laboratory science (ASCP preferred).
  • Master’s degree in a medical/clinical laboratory science or related science discipline.
  • Recent medical chemistry/ immunology laboratory work experience (within the last 7 years).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree in a medical/clinical laboratory science, or related science discipline.
  • Experience in teaching at the undergraduate level.
  • A track record of excellence in teaching didactic and laboratory MLS courses and a working knowledge of educational methods and procedures.
  • ASCP and/or ASCLS membership

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $85,000.00 per year
