Overview:
Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest U.S. Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.
We are seeking for an Assistant Technician who will support the Building Envelope Materials Research (BEMR) Group in the Buildings and Transportation Science Division (BTSD), Energy Science and Technology Directorate (ESTD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). This position will focus on testing new materials, components, and systems that improve energy efficiency in buildings. Candidates will work with experienced staff and use a wide variety of experimental facilities.
Major Duties / Responsibilities:
You will:
- Set up experiments
- Build test sections of building walls, ceilings, and roofs among others
- Install sensors (e.g., thermocouples, pressure transducers, heat flux transducers, relative humidity sensors) on test samples
- Wire sensors to data acquisition systems
- Program data acquisition systems
- Coordinate assembly with ORNL personnel (e.g., electricians, pipe fitters)
- Run experiments and collect data from environmental test chambers
- Coordinate with researchers to carryout test plans for experiments
- Monitor test conditions and adjust environmental chambers controls as necessary for the prescribed tests
- Troubleshoot malfunctioning equipment
- Track calibration status of instruments and coordinate calibration with metrology group
- Participate in research safety reviews to identify potential hazards associated with new and ongoing projects
Basic Qualifications:
- Associate degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Technology, Manufacturing Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering, Mechatronics, or related discipline, or high school diploma with at least 3 years of relevant work experience.
- Works both independently and in a team environment with various levels of supervision
- Functions well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever-changing needs
- Self-motivated
- Properly interprets and follows instructions
- Follows safety guidelines
- Proficient with Excel
Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of:
- Building construction practices
- Design and assembly of experimental setups
- Installation of sensors, controls, and data acquisition systems
- Calibration and verification of instrumentation
- Refrigeration equipment
- Computed aided design (CAD) software
Travel will be required on occasion.
