PRIMARY PURPOSE or JOB SUMMARY
To provide safe and efficient transportation for preschool children according to applicable safety standards. Also assists in monitoring and supervising children in child development center(s) to ensure.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
1. Transports children and staff to and from Head Start centers and other activities using established routes and procedures.
2. Assists in delivering and picking up vehicles for maintenance and repairs.
3. Communicates effectively with parents and staff the rules and regulations as they relate to transporting children.
4. Operates vehicle in a safe manner at all times, observing all traffic rules and policies/procedures of the Head Start Program.
5. Performs daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections according to Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and reports maintenance and repair needs to the Center Coordinators.
6. Ensures safety inspection and repairs have been completed for assigned vehicle operation as required by federal, state, or local authorities.
7. Follows rules of good conduct while operating the bus and ensures passengers do the same.
8. Maintains a safe and clean environment inside and outside the vehicle through regular cleanings.
9. Responds to emergencies in prescribed manner.
10. Maintains all safety equipment in the vehicle at all times and know how to use it.
11. Maintains accurate and current records on vehicle repairs, child emergency contact information, route descriptions, accident reports, mileage logs, daily vehicle inspections, and gas purchases.
12. Submits reports on a timely basis.
13. Assists teachers in monitoring and supervising children while in the classrooms and on the playground and field trips.
14. Performs miscellaneous duties, such as delivering center mail, answering phone calls, making follow up calls, filing, etc.
15. Performs routine cleaning and maintenance activities, such as sweeping and mopping floors.
16. Understands and follows the policies of the Transportation Handbook as well as policies and procedures of GLEAMNS.
17. Performs required safety checks and ensures no child is left unsupervised at the end of each route or field trips.
18. Collaborates with bus monitor to ensure children are released to authorized adults and at authorized stops.
19. Collaborates with the bus monitor to teach children safe riding practices and safety procedures on and off the bus.
20. Participates in transportation staff meetings and professional development as assigned.
21. Performs any other duties assigned by the supervisor.
ACCOUNTABILITY
Responsible for the safe transport of children to pre-determined points for loading and unloading.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
None.
QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma or a combination of education and experience commensurate with the job description. Minimum two years related working experience. A valid South Carolina Commercial Driver’s License with school bus endorsement is desirable and evidence of a good driving record.
EQUIPMENT AND MACHINES
Emergency Communication System- Mobile Telephone. Working knowledge of computer and modern office equipment.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Must be dependable, have appropriate and professional dress.
- Must be able to bend, stoop, and lift at least 50 pounds.
- Successfully pass drug/alcohol testing.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS
Must have ability to communicate with a variety of people, work independently, and maintain strict confidentiality of program data. Must be cooperative and display a positive attitude towards working as a team with other staff members. Must exercise discretion and sound judgment in the performance of assigned duties.
