Founded in 1805, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) is America's first school and museum of fine arts. Located in center city Philadelphia, PAFA is intimate in scale with a strong sense of community. PAFA's undergraduate degree offerings include a BFA in Studio Art and a coordinated BFA with the University of Pennsylvania. Graduate programs include an MFA and Low-Residency MFA degree, and a Post-Baccalaureate certificate. PAFA's museum has an outstanding collection of American art, and the museum actively collects and exhibits contemporary art, including work in new media. Additionally, PAFA is home to the Brodsky Center, a print and papermaking center focused on the creation of innovative editions by contemporary artists.

Reporting to the President and CEO, the Chief Experience Officer will base their work on current research and best practices in the fields of museum education, community education and partnerships, and visitor engagement. They will provide visionary and strategic leadership for a portfolio of educational programs to ensure the museum provides high-quality services that are responsive to and speaks to issues in the community, especially ones that represent the museum's values, including diversity, equity, inclusion, access, and belonging. They develop and maintain relationships with other arts, community, and education organizations and leaders.
This position will initiate, plan, and manage a diverse portfolio of grants that support the department's efforts and increase earned revenues from program participants. Working collaboratively with the Development team, they will assist in the cultivation of donors and general fundraising activities to benefit the program area and cultivate interest among its audiences.
Essential Functions:
This position will design and develop experiences for museum visitors and develop methods that facilitate the engagement of visitors with the museums rich collections and programs. Successful candidates will demonstrate a deep understanding of how to engage cross-generational and diverse audiences with a welcoming and accessible approach. They will also serve as an advocate for program development leading staff in creating partnerships with K-12 and family programming that positively impact the community. More specifically, the major responsibilities of the position include:

  • Coordinate the development, implementation, and administration of educational programs, budgetary processes, and community outreach.
  • Deepen partnerships with PreK-12 schools in Philadelphia and across Pennsylvania. Enhance the value the museum can contribute to 21st-century skills and the curriculum and inspire greater involvement for teachers and students.
  • Expand and continually improve the museums engagement with the greater Philadelphia community. Aim to make the museum an essential resource and must-see destination.
  • Leverage digital, in-person, and distance platforms and experiences to encourage audiences to explore art and the museum.
  • Integrate what is traditionally known as Visitors Services to capture, respond to, and build relationships with multiple, rotating audiences.
  • Oversee all aspects of the evaluation of professional and support staff involved in conference services, youth programming, and summer camps.
  • Identify relevant sources of funding and complete applications for grants related to training and development.
  • Develop, implement and monitor department budgets and grant/contract budgets.
  • Prepare annual budget request and supervises the expenditures of funds.
  • Provide leadership in developing and managing grants from external agencies in cooperation with the Chief Development Officer.
