The Chief Media and Executive Communications Officer is responsible for directly supporting the Vice Chancellor Strategic Communications in developing the overarching strategic framework and development of communications for the university related to earned and owned media as well as leadership communications. The person in this role supervises four important units within Strategic Communications responsible for elevating and protecting the reputation of the nation's top-ranked public university, including: Issues Management, which responds to a wide variety of inquiries from members of the media, working closely with top leadership to develop responses and proactively plan for emergencies; Proactive Media (Pitching), a team dedicated to working with faculty, researchers and leadership to develop news releases and targeted pitches to increase positive stories about UCLA in earned media; Executive and Internal Communications, which creates speeches, presentations, campus internal communications, social media content and strategic themes for the senior executive leaders of the institution; and UCLA Media, which includes UCLA Newsroom and UCLA Magazine, the university's primary owned channels for news and information about the institution, highlighting research, initiatives, successes and profiling individuals across our diverse campus. The incumbent will also supervise a small operations team, which manages special projects and supports the teams listed above in working productively and effectively with other units in Strategic Communications from brand marketing to video production to strategic insights.

Required/Preferred

1. 10 to 20 years of experience in media relations, including developing effective strategies for successful issues management and effective placements in earned media.

2. 10-20 years of experience supporting owned media channels for a large organization, working effectively with a variety of partners to produce and promote content designed to elevate the effectiveness of the organization. 10-20 years serving CEOs and senior executives.

3. Demonstrated ability to use communications strategies to move public opinion, encourage stakeholder involvement and support, increase donor support, and establish brand preference.

4. Demonstrated experience in ensuring that communications align with strategic branding efforts.

5. Demonstrated ability to collaborate with high-level leadership and senior departmental staff to identify communication needs and to conceive and execute programs and services to meet such needs.

6. Demonstrated success in gaining participation through effective communication throughout an organization.

7. Demonstrated ability to articulate goals, strategies, tactics, and benchmarks. Comprehensive, current knowledge of technology with the ability to fully utilize the capabilities of new media.
