Position Description:
A research-focused clinical fellow position is available in the NIDA IRP - Translational Addiction Medicine Branch (TAMB) under the leadership of Dr. Lorenzo Leggio, within the National Institute on Drug Abuse Intramural Research Program (NIDA IRP) a research component within the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).
The TAMB conducts translational clinical studies and executes cutting-edge human research that contributes to the understanding of addiction (e.g., deep, ecological momentary assessment and/or digital phenotyping, gut-brain and other neuroendocrine mechanisms) and the development of novel treatments (e.g., medications, behavioral interventions, technology-based modalities). The clinical fellow will be a critical member of our multidisciplinary team and will work closely with our researchers, clinicians, and staff to conduct and aid in the development of research.
We are seeking a candidate who is committed to both participant safety and scientific excellence and understands the intellectual benefits of collaborative research to enhance emerging areas of human based research. The incumbent will serve as the study physician on a variety of early phase clinical research protocols related to alcohol and substance use and addiction and will assume responsibility for providing optimal, safe, and ethical care to study participants, along with providing clinical support toward the TAMB mission of conducting inpatient and outpatient proof-of-concept human laboratory studies. The selected candidate will also be heavily involved in the scientific and research program of the Branch investigators, e.g., development of novel translational and clinical research studies, design of clinical protocols, dissemination of research findings at conferences and lectures, and publication of the results in peer-reviewed Journals.
NIDA will provide clinical and office space adequate to assist in carrying out the job duties at the Biomedical Research Center, located on the Johns Hopkins Bayview Campus in Baltimore, MD. The main NIH campus and the NIDA IRP located in Baltimore provide a rich and highly interactive translational clinical environment. Qualifications:
To be eligible for the Clinical Fellowship, a candidate must:
- be a graduate of an accredited allopathic or osteopathic medical school, and
- have satisfactorily completed a prescribed period of post-graduate training approved by the Council on Medical Education and Hospitals, the American Medical Association, or the American Osteopathic Association, or have completed at least one year of residency in a program approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or another nationally recognized accreditation organization; or
- be accepted into an ACGME- accredited NIH-sponsored graduate medical education training program. The candidate must have demonstrated outstanding scholastic achievement and the ability to successfully conduct a pre-established clinical and/or laboratory research program. This fellowship is open to U.S. and foreign citizens. International medical graduates must have U.S. clinical credentials to satisfy the Standards for Patient Care at the NIH.
