Job Overview


The Clinical Molecular Geneticist is responsible for the development of new assays, tests and kits. Works closely with laboratory leaders and consults with clinical and technical experts to identify unmet needs for new tests and improved methodology.

Clinical Molecular Geneticist, Precision Diagnostics Laboratory:

Nature of Work
Children’s Hospital Colorado is recruiting a full-time PhD and/or MD molecular geneticist for the Precision Diagnostics Laboratory (PDL). The candidate should be ABMGG board-certified or board-eligible in Clinical Molecular Genetics and Genomics or Laboratory Genetics and Genomics. This position is primarily aimed at supporting the clinical activities of the lab, as related to constitutional testing, interpretation and reporting, and clinical support for assay development.

Examples of Work Performed

Provide clinical expertise in interpretation of molecular genetics laboratory test results with primary responsibility for signing out interpretative reports.
Work with variant analysis team to support robust and timely results review.
Give regular feedback regarding workflows to support continuous improvement.
Serve as a clinical consultant during the validation of new assays, with focus on ensuring the assay serves the anticipated clinical needs, development of assay content, and curation of data to support variant interpretation.
Serve as a resource for clinical colleagues regarding questions about test results and testing capabilities and establish collaborative relationships with clinical teams.
Participate in variant review conferences with clinical teams.
Support laboratory quality through participation in proficiency testing and investigations of quality issues as requested by the operational team.
Play an active role in the ABMGG Laboratory Genetics and Genomics program and the Molecular Genetic Pathology fellow education through didactics, teaching during case review, mentorship for research projects, etc.
Contribute to continuing education for technical staff.
Participate in scholarly activity through case reports/series, laboratory focused projects, collaboration with clinical colleagues, etc.
Competencies

Experience with interpretation and results reporting for large NGS panels, ideally whole exome sequencing.
Broad knowledge of genetic variant databases and their utility.
Understanding of interpretation and reporting workflows.
Basic knowledge of NGS wet-bench techniques, data quality, and bioinformatics tools.
Understanding of laboratory quality measures and familiarity with CAP and CLIA regulations.
Ability to work in a collaborative team environment with clinical, scientific, and operational teams.
Desire to join a dynamic and growing laboratory.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Organizes, coordinates, and may perform activities for new assay development; develops assays as required by the laboratory ensuring that assays are developed according to good laboratory practice, consistent with regulatory requirements and DPLM policies and procedures.
  • Regularly assesses the market need for clinical testing and assures that new test methods meet patient needs. Meets with key stakeholder to discuss potential new market areas.
  • Participates in budget process, cost analysis of new or ongoing clinical testing, and makes recommendations to improve testing efficiency, reagents and supply chain costs for continuous process improvement.
  • Reviews and interprets laboratory test reports.
  • Partners with operational counterpart to establish a culture of openness, continuous quality improvement and staff engagement.
  • Supports clinical research protocols and potential industry sponsored clinical studies
  • Provides technical expertise on programs, processes, and best practices. Teaches and/or mentors team members, medical staff and colleagues to enhance technical knowledge base, particularly during and after implementation of a new assay.
  • Presents scientific and educational posters and presentations to staff and colleagues. Serves as an interface between medical staff and technical staff.
  • Develops and maintains strong technical partnerships with clients/vendors in collaborative long term relationships.
  • Maintains awareness of business conditions and trends in field of expertise and supports collaborations with potential partners to enhance revenue.
  • Supports strategic efforts by maintaining awareness of business trends and collaborates with potential partners to enhance revenue.
  • Participates in leadership activities for the operation, contributing to strategic planning process, annual goals, and performance metrics for laboratory; participates in implementation of plans for aligning function(s) to operational vision and strategy.
  • Is knowledgeable of and supports compliance against federal, state, and local regulations for functional area(s).

Guidelines: Guidelines are in the form of stated vision and goals for the operation.

Complexity: Work assignment is unstructured and leader is responsible for developing, directing, and managing outcomes and multi-year strategies in order to achieve the objectives of the operation. Duties performed include operational planning; developing standards, priorities, guidelines, processes, measurement (evaluation) systems; implementation of production and performance management standards; and allocating resources. Work is strategic and operational in nature.

Decision Making: Employee is responsible for managing multiple functions that requires developing and implementing strategies, business plans, and policies; determining required resources; defining and evaluating performance standards; and resolving complex business problems.

Qualifications

  • EDUCATION – PhD in a chemical, physical, biological or directly related science.
  • EXPERIENCE5-10 years of directly related experience preferred. Working knowledge of laboratory processes.
  • EQUIVALENCY None.
  • CERTIFICATION(S) – ABMM Board Certification desirable for Microbiology, but not required.

Salary Information

Annual Salary Range (Based on 40 hours worked per week): $110,711.29 to $166,066.93
Hourly Salary Range: $53.23 to $79.84
