This is a part-time temporary, non-benefit based position with an anticipated end date of October 11, 2023 with the possibility of extension.
This position for the Department of Engineering is responsible for a variety of duties related to generating original material promoting the work of the Center for Digital Civil Society (“Center”) and engaging the broader community. We are hiring a part-time Communications Assistant to support the development of written content to share the story of the Center’s work with our community and beyond. This is a non-exempt position working approximately 20 hours per week.
We are looking for someone who communicates effectively and presents ideas clearly. Ideally, the candidate has some knowledge of or prior work experience with technology, technology’s impact on society, technology policy, computing or data ethics, or education. This position is ideal for an early career individual who is looking to gain additional experience in public interest communications.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Draft content for the Center’s website, emails, newsletters, and social media
- Develop communications and outreach materials for specific audiences and stakeholders, including faculty, students, and community members
- Create talking points, briefing materials, and information packets for presentations as needed by the Founding Director
- Draft and publish press releases, media advisories, and op-eds
- In collaboration with external partners, assist with the development of visual materials, including infographics and video content
- Provide quality control, including proofreading and editing all print and electronic public facing materials
- Essential office support

Job Requirements:Minimum Qualifications
- HS Diploma required.
- 3 years work experience. Education beyond high school may count towards experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- AA Degree preferred.

- Computer and software, including MS Office Suite or Google Docs, especially e-mail, word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation software.
- Some experience with creating visual assets or a willingness to learn.

- Communicate in a professional and effective manner, both verbally and in writing, and request clarification when needed.

- Represent the Center/School of Engineering and the University of San Diego in a professional manner with staff, faculty, the community of USD and the San Diego business community.
