Position: Community Supervision Officer

Responsibilities

Under general supervision, performs professional correction work supervising adults and juveniles placed on probation or in detention by the courts. Work involves assessing probationers, meeting with probationers to ensure adherence to terms of probation, and maintaining records of probationers’ activities and status. Employee is also responsible for determining level of supervision necessary for individual probationers, providing limited counseling and referring clients to probation assistance programs, and conferring with law enforcement and prosecutors department in matters pertaining to violation of probation by clients. Employee is subject to the usual potential hazards of contact with legally delinquent adults and juveniles.

Essential Duties and responsibilities include the following:

· Meets with probationers in office or at probationer’s residences according to established schedules, or more often as necessary, advising clients of provisions of probation agreements and ensuring adherence to agreements, and providing limited counseling and referring clients to community-based probation assistance programs, as necessary; meets with and/or contacts family members, employers or other references provided by clients to ensure client’s adherence to provisions of probation.

· Maintains individual case files, recording all contacts and preparing reports of clients’ status; obtains and records probationers’ place of residence, family ties, employment, prior criminal convictions, etc., and amends files to reflect changes as appropriate; prepares documents to dismiss probation, as appropriate, and obtains judge’s signatures.

· Utilizes computer terminal connected to the Texas National Crime Information Center and/or contacts appropriate law enforcement agencies by telephone to inquire about criminal history and/or current criminal charges against probationers; assess risk of further legal violations by probationers, determines necessary level of supervision, and implements appropriate reporting schedule.

· Utilizes computerized data entry equipment and various word processing and/or file maintenance programs to enter, store and/or retrieve case file information; summarizes information for standard reports, selecting data from varied sources.

· Confers with prosecutor attorney’s office, judge and/or law enforcement personnel about clients’ violations of probation terms or other need to amend probation status, and amends probationers’ file accordingly; testifies in court as probationers’ status and adherence to reporting schedules and other terms of probation, as appropriate.

· Confers with counselors or other professionals connected to agencies providing human services to probationer, and maintains knowledge of probationers’ needs, status, progress, etc. May install electronic monitoring equipment utilized to ensure probationers arrive at residences at appointed times, as appropriate.

· Enforce court orders as well as dealing with all violations as directed by departmental policy. Perform random drug screens and make referrals to appropriate agencies and treatment providers also be able to work in an ever changing environment while adapting to the needs of the offenders.

· Meets with juveniles and counsels or provides advice to them regarding probation or sentencing; evaluates juveniles on conduct and progress.

· Conducts program orientations and intake; creates and maintains files as necessary.

· Attends courts and school hearings as necessary, such as expulsion hearings; gathers information in preparation for hearings; makes recommendations as necessary.

· Counsels students on appropriate behavior, school requirements, and intake or withdrawal; sends, requests, receives, and maintains school records.

· Oversees juvenile intakes, inventory and fingerprinting; enters data into system.

· Fingerprints new and existing employees, inters, and volunteers to perform background investigations.

· Gathers personal and family information from detained juveniles.

· Manages the juvenile phone system in the detention center.

· Notifies parents of detained juveniles regarding prescription refills and medical needs; schedules medical and dental appointment for detained juveniles.

· Enters incident reports and restraint reports for detention and post-adjudication juveniles.

· Conducts office visits and field visits with juveniles at home, school or elsewhere.

· Prepares court documents and distributes or processes as necessary.

· Oversees juvenile intakes, inventory and fingerprinting; enters data into system.

· Sets up accounts for phone calls for juveniles detained in the facility.

· Document all contacts with juveniles and others involved in their case, along with all activities involved.

· Complete sex offender risk assessments for sex offenders that have hearings for Judge to assign risk level.

· Sends copy of sex offender registration and orders to stop registering the juvenile to proper law enforcements agency.

· Perform such other tasks as may be assigned from time to time by supervisor.

Education/experience requirements:

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Social or Behavioral Sciences.

At least one (5) year experience in social services, criminal justice or related field.

Native American preference is observed:
