Correctional Housing Unit Manager I - NC Department of Public Safety - Anson County

***The standardized annual salary for this position is $51,201* dependent upon fund availability and OSHR approval.****

**This position is currently located within the Department of Public Safety but will transfer to the Department of Adult Correction when it is established on January 1st, 2023.***

Reporting to a Correctional Housing Unit Manager II, the Correctional Housing Unit Manager I is primarily responsible for all aspects concerning a caseload of offenders in a multi-level custody correctional facility housing unit. Responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assisting a Correctional Housing Unit Manager II in the management and operations of an institutional housing unit within a close custody facility.
  • Monitoring of the unit case management system which entails providing individual counseling, participating in group sessions, and maintaining reports related to offenders' progress.
  • Coordinating the program staff, supervise custody staff, and in the absence of the supervisor, assume responsibility for the management of the unit.
  • Serving on institution classification committees as needed.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits with established working hours of Monday-Friday, 1pm to 9:30pm and may require working beyond normal work schedule to meet business need.

The salary grade for this position is NC07 (Salary Range: $34,084 - $59,646). State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.

About Anson Correctional Institution:
Anson Correctional Institution houses female offenders in closed and medium custody in the former Lanesboro Correctional Institution. Anson CI additionally has a male offender unit on it's campus that houses only male offenders at the minimum custody level. The largest offender population consists of medium custody offenders.

To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess *ALL* of the following: *

  • Documented supervisory skills in a prison facility.
  • Documented knowledge of facility operations.
  • Documented knowledge of Prisons’ policy and procedures.
  • Documented report writing skills.
  • Documented knowledge of supportive counseling techniques and/or interviewing techniques for intake assessments.

Management Preferences:

  • Experience with the Unit Management concept concerning unit security, operational schedules, inmate searches, crisis intervention, unit maintenance, NCVIP, and employee supervision techniques that provides a positive work environment.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and four years of correctional experience, one of which must have been at the supervisory level; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
