GENERAL SUMMARY:

A Cytotechnologist is qualified to prepare and microscopically evaluate all types of cytology specimens. Cytotechnologists are diagnosticians that render the final diagnosis on the majority of negative gynecologic cases. The only other laboratorian that renders a final diagnosis in Anatomic Pathology is a pathologist. A Cytotechnologist is authorized to perform responsibilities as specified by the laboratory director and supervision. All specimen processing, test performance and result reporting are globally supervised by the technical supervisor (i.e. laboratory director or his/her designee). This position reports to the Manager, Laboratory.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

1. Microscopically examine and independently diagnose and sign out negative gynecologic specimens. Determine which gynecologic specimens must be reviewed and signed out by a pathologist. Microscopically examine and diagnose non-gynecologic and fine needle aspiration (FNA) specimens for pathologist review and sign out (based on laboratory need).

2. Maintain quality assurance records, workload recording (not to exceed 100 slides per day), and correlation of files consistent with CLIA 88.

3. Depending on campus location may:

  • Assist with FNA and bronchial biopsy (EBUS) slide preparation and rapid on-site evaluation of specimen adequacy/cellularity.
  • Establish and updates cytology procedures as required by CAP and other regulatory agencies.
  • Perform laboratory preparation including the preparation of solutions and reagents.
  • Maintains and records inventory levels of cytology supplies.
  • Data entry procedures.

4. Participates in:

  • Q.I./process improvements, data collection, QC documentation, and/or CAP surveys as applicable to the assigned department.
  • Staff activities of a High Reliability Organization (HRO).
  • Friend-at-Work program and assists in training new hires as applicable/assigned.
  • Staff meetings and committee meetings as assigned.

5. Cost effectiveness: Efficient use of time in completing tasks accurately and timely. Mindful of appropriate use of laboratory funds through purchase requests and the observance of wasteful use of supplies.

STANDARD QUALIFICATIONS

A. Education / Training:

  • Required BA or BS degree and successful completion of a CAAHEP accredited program in Cytotechnology.

B. Work Experience:

  • None

C. Certification, Licensure, Registration:

  • ASCP Cytotechnologist Registry required. Successful passing of federally mandated Proficiency Testing.

D. Other Qualifications:

  • Ability to focus and concentrate for extended periods of time.
  • Visual recognition and identification skills.
  • Manual dexterity, strong organizational, problem solving, interpersonal, written and verbal skills are essential.
  • Basic computer knowledge using Anatomic Pathology specific software and medical terminology is required.
  • Attention to detail and following written instructions is essential.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

A. Physical Effort:

  • Lengthy time sitting and considerable walking or standing may occur.
  • Procedures are often performed in areas with space restrictions.
  • Majority of the day can be spent at a microscope and computer causing eye strain.

B. Work Environment:

  • Works in a laboratory with potential hazardous chemicals and reagents and infectious materials.
  • Potential risk of an exposure to hazardous medications or waste materials of hazardous medications
