Job Functions, Duties, Responsibilities and Position Qualifications:
POSITION SUMMARY
Receive sort and accession medical samples by product line or specimen type for laboratory testing. This includes courier check in, opening packages, patient verification, data entry and accessioning (numbering), send outs and scanning copies of requisitions daily. Use a computer for data entry, specimen verification and printing accessioning labels. Identify samples that require clarification.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Receive and reconciles specimens received from courier and/or carrier through Spec Rec. Sort medical samples by product line or specimen type according to established protocol for laboratory testing
- Must be able to identify samples when triaging that are not processed in-house (Send Out).
- Assist in generating the specimen received at recon reports daily and ensure all specimens received at recon are accessioned and/or accounted for. Documented in the shared folder.
- Order-enter patient, physician and specimen information accurately and efficiently
- Accession (number) all medical specimens (jars, tubes, slides), test requisition and all other paper information provided for histology, cytology and esoteric laboratories.
- Accession all clinical send out cases to third party laboratories via TPS and third party laboratory web portals.
- Able to efficiently address and resolve issues concerning specimen integrity, viability, tests requests and requirements and turnaround time.
- Must be able to upload and update cases, inclusive of sending communication updates to all parties involved on a case by case basis.
- Ensure requisitions are scanned into OnBase system for company-wide access via web site at the end of every accession.
- Must be able to identify problems that arise during the accessioning process such as confirming patient identity, specimen integrity and either resolves them or requests assistance from the supervisory personnel.
- Identify and apply client specific instructions on a case by case basis (client notes).
- Handles all reporting requirements as directed by the Non-Technical Supervisor which includes but not limited to monitoring strategic and sensitive accounts, generating reconciliation specimen received but not accessioned report as assigned Supervisor.
- Must assist in trouble shooting and/or specimen investigations.

- Compose and communicate correspondences pertaining to Data Entry at all levels.
- Other duties as directed by the supervisor and/or department’s manager on a daily basis pertaining to the Non-Technical operations.
PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENTS
- Accurately and efficiently enter all patient, physician, specimen and test requested information in Lab Manager.
- Ability to key all test requisitions, averaging no more than 3 minutes per accession
- Must be able to check in requisitions accurately and identify and document discrepancies using SpecRec.
- Must maintain an overall error rate less than 1%
- Understanding of medical terminology
- Follow all laboratory safety and housekeeping procedures
- Follow all compliance, regulatory and laboratory policies and procedures
POSITION REQUIRMENTS
- Some college or minimum of Associates degree required along with a minimum of 2 years’ experience in healthcare / lab industries
- Must be able to accurately type 50-55 wpm
- Proficient in MS Word & and Excel preferred
DESIRED
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Must have strong organizational, time management and proofing skills
- Able to operate standard office equipment which includes menu-driven computer workstations, computer printers, office mailing machines, fax machines and basic laboratory equipment
- Attention to detail
- Knowledge of Medical Terminology
- Clerical or data entry experience
- Must be flexible with schedule
