The Landfill Facility covers 1,200 acres and the physical landfill area is 316 acres. The “Hill” is the highest point in Manatee County at 130’ in elevation above sea level and you can even view the Skyway Bridge on a clear day. The Lena Rd Landfill buried an average of 1,034 tons per day in 2020 and is expected to last until 2041 based on the current population.

The Deputy Director – Utilities (Solid Waste Division) – is responsible for planning, designing, and operating solid waste facilities for the County. Provides technical assistance and input related to garbage collection franchise(s); plans and implements a comprehensive waste diversion/recycling program for the Landfill; operates the Landfill as an enterprise fund. This is a highly technical and specialized position involving environmental, engineering, administrative, management, legal, business, and accounting principles.

  Oversees the daily operation of the Landfill, Scalehouse, Solid Waste Collection/Enforcement, and Recycling; consults with engineers on designs for improvements at the Landfill and other Solid Waste facilities; formulates and administers contracts with consultants.
• Supervises the preparation of operating budgets; recommends and monitors capital improvement budgets and projects.

  Knowledge of local, State and Federal laws pertaining to solid waste collection, storage, and disposal.
• Knowledge of landfill operations and design, garbage collection practices/procedures, and waste reduction methods and programs.
• Knowledge of engineering as it relates to solid waste disposal operations
• Ability to organize, prepare and present oral and written reports, findings and recommendations.
• Ability to operate division activities in a cost-effective manner, in compliance with regulatory agency requirements.

• 
  Bachelor’s degree in engineering, environmental sciences, business or public administration, or closely related field.
• Minimum of five (5) years work experience in managing solid waste disposal facilities.
• Manager of Landfill Operations (MoLO) certification, or ability to obtain within eighteen (18) months of employment.
• Minimum of three (3) years supervisory experience.
• Valid driver's license with valid Florida driver's license within 30 days of hire.
