Design Technician Associate

Location: Highway Design Team, Design Bureau, Ames, IA

The Design Bureau is looking to hire a Design Technician Associate that will be part of a team designing highway improvement projects and construction plans that will be used to enhance the state and national transportation systems in Iowa. This position is an entry-level position and the selected individual will become an essential member of a highway design team developing innovative transportation improvement projects. The Design Technician Associate will assist in the development of highway and bridge concept statements under the supervision of engineers and senior designers. Having an understanding of the principles of highway design will be a benefit.

Typical Responsibilities:

  • Produces highway and bridge concept statements that are consistent with Iowa DOT design guidance.
  • Participates in a team that makes decisions that effectively balance mobility, environmental impacts, property impacts, cost, and long-term maintenance.
  • Generates bid items and material quantities to determine construction costs.
  • Assists in producing roadway geometric features including vertical and horizontal highway alignments.
  • Generates crash history information.
  • Submits traffic and bridge requests.
  • Uses various engineering software programs to generate project information.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

  • Graduation from high school (or GED equivalent), and experience equal to two years of full-time work in design drafting, cartography, photogrammetry, engineering survey, soils survey, land survey, or construction inspection.
  • A total of two years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in math, engineering, or a related field equals one year of full-time experience.
  • Graduation from an accredited vocational program in engineering technology, design drafting, engineering survey, soils survey, land survey, construction inspection, or cartography.
