Position Summary
The primary purpose of this position is to provide leadership and support to the Department of Campus Recreation. The position serves as the chief operating professional regarding campus recreation operations. The position works to achieve goals across all campus recreation programs and facilities. The positions’ day to day responsibilities are focused on the management of a comprehensive sport facility. Responsibilities include the leadership and guidance of professional staff, contract staff, and student employees as well as the services including sport programs, outdoors, aquatics, esports, and fitness/wellness.
The position makes decisions regarding strategic direction and planning, is fiscally accountable for expenditures in the department, and is charged with maintaining a cohesive team to accomplish goals and the department’s mission. The Director understands and is willing to advocate for the development of credit bearing experiences offered by the Department.
The position will work closely with representatives from Healthy Campus Initiative, University Enterprises, University Facilities Management, Athletics, Health and Wellness Department, and the Division of Student Affairs. The position reports to the Associate Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs and is an integral part of the long-term vision and sustainability of the unit.

Required Education/Experience/Skills
This position requires a Master’s degree. May also consider a Bachelor’s degree and equivalent independent experience.

Preferred Education/Experience/Skills
Master’s degree in sport management, sport administration, higher education and administration, physical education, recreational management, or similar field.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
This position should have knowledge of recreation procedures, recreation facility management procedures, membership practices, ability to supervise others, computer skills necessary to perform job functions, ability to perform detail work and make decisions under pressure.
The position requires willingness to engage in and strengthening community connections with Greater Asheville when applicable and appropriate.
Working knowledge and commitment to NIRSA and/or other professional associations is encouraged.
Defined communication skills and outstanding organization skills are essential to the success of this position; knowledge of college-aged student identity development theory and application and five years working in the field.
The Director sets priorities for the unit, understands the complicated nature of working in a shared facility, is highly collaborative, committed to professional and student development, visionary, and can speak to the value of Campus Recreation in Higher Education.

A visionary leader with innovative ideas that increase the department’s identity on campus and enhance the technological capabilities of program areas is desired.
